ii) Thermal conductance
iii) Heat flux
iv) Thermal storage capacity
v) Heat transfer coefficient. 5
c) There is a uniform rate of heat generation of 500 MW/m3 within a stainless
steel plate having K = 21 W/mK and 1 cm thick. The temperature on either
side of the plate are maintained at 100° C calculate
i) The temperature on the center line.
ii) Temperature at one quarter of the thickness from the surface.

b) Derive an equation for temperature dIstribution through a fin of uniform
rectangular cross sectional area. 8
c) Draw an equivalent thermal circuit for lumped capacitance solid (analogous
electric network) and hence obtain an expression for transient response of
. the body. In this expression write on the quantity representing thermal time
constant. 7

4. a) Write on LMTD and correlation factor. Draw the temperature profiles for
counter flow heat exchanger and condenser. S
b) Derive an expression for LMTD of a counter flow heat exchanger. S
c) A counter flow double pipe heat exchanger using super heated steam is used
to heat the water flowing at the rate of 10500 Kg/hr. The steam enters the
neat-exchanqer at 195 C and leaves at 140 C. The inlet and exit temperatures
0 0

of water are 29 C and 79 C respectively. If over all heat transfer coefficient

0 0

c) A surface condenser consists of thin walled circular tubes (each tube is 22.5
mm in diameter and 5 m long) arranged in parallel through which water flows.
If the mass flow rate of water tube is 0.8 Kg/s and its inlet and outlet
temperatures are. known to be 210 C and 290 C respectively, calculate the
average heat transfer coefficient associated with flow of water. Take
thermophysical properties of water at 250 C as p = 997.65 Kg/m3,
f.! = 0.862 x 10-3 Kg/ms K = 0.'6078 W/mo C, Cp = 4.178 kJ/KgOC. 7
