COURSE SUMMARY: Whole and small group instruction is teacher modeled and directed and includes the use of an rBook where
students read, write, and react. During small group instruction, skills are reinforced and practiced. Read 180 software allows for
differentiated instruction at students’ specific skill levels. Modeled and independent reading is designed to help students build
fluency, and reading comprehension skills using paperback novels, ebooks, and audiobooks in students Lexile (reading) ranges.

STUDENT AGENDA: Students are required to have their agenda at all times in school/class. The agenda may be used to
communicate with parents. Students will also use the agenda to write passes when needed. No agenda, no pass.

TEXT AND RESOURCES: Read 180 Topic Software, rBook workbook, Read 180 student resources, including (graphic organizers,
reading logs, quickwrites, comprehension checks, vocabulary), Scholastic Choices Magazine, other supplementary learning materials

CLASSROOM MATERIALS: Read 180 Topic Software, rBook workbook, Read 180 student resources, including (graphic organizers,
reading logs, quickwrites, comprehension checks, vocabulary)

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to speak and act in a way that is conducive to learning and respectful
engagement in the classroom. Students are expected to use the technology in the classroom with care and respect. Students are
expected to have required basic supplies so that they can complete classwork and be successful in the classroom. Students are
expected to follow the classroom rules and procedures as set by the teacher and the school.

UNITS OF STUDY (1st Semester) : Workshop 1, 4 (6th), 3, 5 (7th)

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: RI (Reading Inventory), Reading Counts quizzes, Read 180 Topic Software scores, rSkills tests, rBook
Workshop Wrap-up activities, tests, quizzes, in-class assignments, and class projects

GRADING AND REPORTING: A= 90-100 B=80-89 C=74-79 D=70-73 F= Below a 70


MAKE-UP WORK POLICY: Students can make up work within 3 days of their return from being absent. It is the student’s responsibility
to get their make-up work form the teacher, and turn it in within 3 days of receiving it.

CONDUCT (include PBIS Synergy Information): Smitha Middle School follows the PBIS guidelines for encouraging positive behavior
in the classroom. Students are expected to speak and act in a way that is conducive to learning and respectful engagement in the
classroom. Students are given “points” for certain types of behavior that do not follow the PBIS guidelines. Parents may view their
students points from any class by logging in to Synergy and looking at the “conduct” column within student grades. For mare

Homework: Homework will be strongly encouraged as a means of practicing newly taught skills, reviewing previously mastered
skills, developing independent study habits, or to extend and enrich the curriculum. Completing homework is also strongly
encouraged as a means of preparing for class discussions, class work, quizzes, and tests. Some students may need more preparation
than others, and some assignments may be noted as required and will be expected to be completed by all students.

PARENT TIPS: Students are expected to read 20-30 minutes a day when they get home. Please make sure your student has reading
material in the home and ask your student to bring home a library book everyday.

This plan may be changed to reflect the needs of the students.

reference.
