Winston Peters revealed
the party was considering
a binding referendum on
the matter.

as we get to the time, we
have to vote we're making
our position very very
clear and we'll enunciate
that on Thursday."
Mr Little said regardless
of what NZ First did, he
would not be doing a deal
with them in exchange for
a referendum and would instead rely on
support from MPs from all parties to back
his changes.
This isn't the first time Mr Little has been
surprised by NZ First at the eleventh
hour.
In June last year NZ First dropped its
support for the three strikes repeal just
hours after Mr Little announced he was
taking it to Cabinet for sign-off.
That at least meant he was prepared for
yesterday's circus.
Ms Martin was given a mandate by the
party to work with Mr Little to get the
legislation as close to NZ First's principles
of "safe, legal and rare" abortions. It's
understood some of her colleagues saw
her dismissal of a referendum when
speaking to RNZ as stepping over the
mark and something that should have
been left to caucus to discuss.
That prompted some MPs to insist
on a referendum out of concern that
having one on euthanasia and not on
abortion would be interpreted as being
inconsistent with the party's long-
standing position.
Mr Peters rejected suggestions his
referendum demand meant his party was
trying to hijack Andrew Little's reforms.
One person who was not surprised a
referendum was on the table was National
MP Chris Bishop, who said the writing
had been on the wall since 1993. Mr Little

will vote against a referendum.
But he said members of his party will be
divided on the issue.
He said he will not exert control
over National Party MPs who spread
misinformation about abortion. He said
currently, in the case of pre-20-week
abortions the practice and the law haven't
married up.
Mr Bridges believes abortion is a
health issue but that there should be
"significantly stronger safeguards" in the
Bill for post-20-week abortions.
He said he doesn't have a clear view on
what these are or the significant changes
the bill would make to the law post-20
weeks.
But he said he understands there are
some cases that this post-20-week
abortions need to happen.
He said people who are seeking an
abortion face tougher tests now than they
would under the new Bill.

Reserve Bank cuts
Official Cash Rate by 0.5
percent to sit at 1 percent
The Reserve Bank (RBNZ) has slashed
its benchmark interest rate by a greater
than expected half a percent in the face of
significant headwinds at home and abroad,
sending the New Zealand dollar plunging.
The official cash rate (OCR) was reduced to
a record low 1 percent, when forecasters had
been expecting a lesser quarter percent cut.
RBNZ Governor Adrian Orr said the risks have
risen and the economy needed more stimulus
to help counter the weaker outlook.
"In the absence of additional monetary

stimulus, employment and inflation would
likely ease relative to our targets."
The RBNZ held the rate steady in June after
cutting by a quarter of a percentage point in
May - its first move in more than two years.
The last time the RBNZ cut by such an
amount was in March 2011 after the
Canterbury earthquakes.
But Mr Orr said recent solid growth and
employment numbers were positive, but
the worsening international outlook was
hurting New Zealand.
"Global economic activity continues to
weaken, easing demand for New Zealand's
goods and services. Heightened uncertainty
and declining international trade have
contributed to lower trading-partner growth."
Mr Orr said low interest rates and increased
government spending were expected to lift
the economy over the coming year. Inflation
was expected to reach its 2 percent target and
employment should remain strong, which are
the RBNZ's overriding policy objectives.
Interest rate decisions are now made by
a committee of four RBNZ staff and three

With an aim to provide flight-like
hospitality to passengers onboard,
Indian Railways has implemented a
pilot project where it has deployed air
hostesses and flight stewards in India's
supreme train, Vande Bharat Express.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism
Corporation (IRCTC) has been given
the responsibility to supervise the trail
project. The service has already been
started in Vande Bharat Express.
In a big step aimed at enhancing
passengers' convenience, the IRCTC has
brought 34 trained air hostesses and
flight steward on Vande Bharat Express
for the duration of six months for a trail
service. If turned out to be successful,
such a service is likely to be implemented
in other trains as well.

remain missing after a helicopter crash
off Fiji's northern coast last Friday.
Gilbert Parker of Victoria was

Fiji authorities said the mother's body
was recovered by villagers from the
Natewa Bay shoreline last weekend.

using these very hard and difficult drugs
that we never saw in this country," he said.
Professor Prasad said Fiji must work with
other jurisdictions and have a collective
effort at all levels to address the issue of the
drug trade in the Pacific. He also called on
Australia and New Zealand to work with
their neighbours to address drug addiction
in the region.
"It's all right to talk about how we can stop
the drug trade, but it is also important for
us to put resources into areas where we can
deal with people who are drug users and
who have been affected by drugs and and
how to rehabilitate some of them.
"I think Australia, New Zealand have
sufficient and the well-developed
experience and exposes and procedures to
deal with the issue of rehabilitation," said

India rejects China's

Jaishankar, Khalilzad discuss
Afghan peace process opposition to its move to
confer UT status on Ladakh
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on
Tuesday held discussions with United States
peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad here on the
recent developments pertaining to the
ongoing peace efforts in Afghanistan.
The two sides discussed how India and the
US could work effectively to ensure lasting
peace in Afghanistan that has been engulfed
in an 18-year-long war.
"Useful discussions with US Special

Khalilzad. Provided a comprehensive
update on the situation in Afghanistan.

together effectively," Jaishankar wrote on
Twitter.
Khalilzad's visit to India has come as part of
his efforts to build international consensus
on the Afghan peace process following the
recent round of talks between the Taliban
and the US in Qatar's capital city of Doha.
The US peace envoy had said on Monday
that "excellent progress" was made during
the talks.
"Building on excellent progress in Kabul
last week, I've spent the last few days in
Doha, focused on the remaining issues
in completing a potential deal with the
Taliban that would allow for a conditions-
based troop withdrawal. We have made
excellent progress," he tweeted.
The talks were centred around US' promise
to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, in
exchange for the guarantee by the former

areas under the Taliban's control, would
not become a platform for transnational
terrorism.
In addition, efforts are underway to
organise a direct meeting between
Khalilzad and Taliban co-founder Mullah

boundary into its administrative
jurisdiction. This firm and consistent
position remains unchanged. Recently
India has continued to undermine China's
territorial sovereignty by unilaterally
changing its domestic law," the statement
by the spokesperson read.
The Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation)
Bill, 2019, which strips Jammu and
Kashmir's status of a state and converts
it into a Union Territory with legislature
and carves out Ladakh region as a UT
without legislature, was passed in a
division pressed by the Opposition with
125 votes in favour and 61 against, and an
NCP member abstaining.

A new India,
that now
asserts itself
There has been a complete turnaround, in
the wake of events of past 5-6 years, since the
change of guard at New Delhi, that India has
emerged as an assertive state in the world. The
proactive, assertive & a very strong headed
approach of Modi led NDA government to
take any situation head on, is unprecedented
and unusual. It is something that Indians have
never experienced before in past seventy-two
years since Independence. The common man
is accepting the newfound successes and new
milestones that are being achieved but with
due caution.
India is finally being recognised and accepted
as a world power to which, the whole world
now looks up to, whether it’s about terrorism,
climate change or world economy. India’s
recent leap in defence and scientific sphere
has put even its adversaries in awe. India’s
successful moon mission Chandraan-2, is
a classic example. Despite of some gloom
in retail sector there is still a sense of
anticipation and hope of positivity, in the
minds of a very large middle-class community
of the country. The things may have not
turned out exactly as anticipated but at least
the intent and efforts made were honest and
genuine.
With the Balakote air strike, the backbone
of terror camps in Pakistan has broken and
the remaining job is being completed by
the Indian security forces in Kashmir, very
bravely and professionally. Country has just
celebrated the twentieth anniversary of ‘Kargil
War’. Though initially Indian forces paid
heavily for the intelligence failure and hence
there was some laxity in response at early
stages, but then our valiant soldiers fought in
the toughest conditions to defeat the enemy
that had challenged our might and regained
what was rightfully ours. On the twentieth
anniversary of this historic war we salute our
force’s bravery, their indomitable spirit and
their determination to win against all odds.
It is also time to reflect on the change in the
nation’s philosophy and outlook.
India, till Kargil war and even a decade after
that, had a defensive mindset. This was a
legacy being carried since independence.
The national leadership during Kargil, was
not willing to expand the conflict beyond
LoC while our armed forces remained
deployed for any contingency. This was
due to many reasons, primarily was the

article 370 and 35-A has stunned everyone in
the country. While the masses are celebrating
government’s very bold and historic decision
people with vested interest and other
opposition parties are busy condemning it.
The way Modi and Shah duo actioned on this
momentous bill so swiftly only reflects their
prowess and capabilities of strong leaders.
Now Jammu & Kashmir is like any other state
or Union Territory of India where any citizen
of the country is free to go, settle down there,
do any business or buy property. We can now
expect that normalcy returns to the valley
sooner than later and also it should end the
decades old terrorism and uncertainty forever.

It seems buyers in Auckland are turning to
more affordable properties as the million-

rankings released on Tuesday.
Rankireddy-Shetty moved seven places
up in the latest BWF rankings. In the final
of the Thailand Open, unseeded Indian
duo defeated Chinese pair Li Jun Hui and
Liu Yu Chen by 21-19, 18-21, 21-18.
Whereas Chinese pair Li Jun Hui and Liu
Yu Chen drops one place and now settles
at the third spot, after facing defeat at the
hands of Indian pair in the final.
In the men's singles, Kidambi Srikanth
and Sameer Verma retained their 10th
and 13th spot respectively. While Sai
Praneeth also remains unchanged at 19th
