Your Profile?
Create your profile in Google Scholar:
1. Sign to your Google account, or create one if you don't have one.
2. Once you've signed in to your Google account, the Citations sign up form will ask you to confirm the
spelling of your name, and to enter your affiliation, interests, etc. We recommend that you also
enter your university email address which would make your profile eligible for inclusion in Google
Scholar search results.
3. On the next page, you'll see groups of articles written by people with names similar to yours. Click
"Add all articles" next to each article group that is yours, or "See all articles" to add specific articles
from that group. If you don't see your articles in these groups, click "Search articles" to do a regular
Google Scholar search, and then add your articles one at a time. Feel free to do as many searches as
you like.
4. Once you're done with adding articles, it will ask you what to do when the article data changes in
Google Scholar. You can either have the updates applied to your profile automatically, or you can
choose to review them beforehand. In either case, you can always go to your profile and make
changes by hand.
5. Finally, you will see your profile. This is a good time to add a few finishing touches - upload your
professional looking photo, visit your university email inbox and click on the verification link, double
check the list of articles, and, once you're completely satisfied, make your profile public. Voila - it's
now eligible to appear in Google Scholar when someone searches for your name!

Reviewing Process

Reasons why an article is rejected:

1. It does not fall within the Aims and Scope
2. It is incomplete
3. The procedures and/or analysis of the data is seen to
be defective
4. The conclusions cannot be justified on the basis of the
rest of the paper
5. It is simply a small extension of a different paper, often
from the same authors
6. It is incomprehensible
7. It is boring

Reviewing Process
Reasons why an article is accepted.
1. It provides insight into an important issue
2. The insight is used to develop a framework or theory
3. The insight stimulates new, important questions.
4. The methods used to explore the issue are appropriate
(for example, data collection and analysis of data).
5. The methods used are applied rigorously and explain
why and how the data support the conclusions.
6. Connections to prior work in the field or from other
fields are made
7. The article tells a good story.
-Dr. Joseph Astrachan and Dr. Torsten Pieper, Editors of the Journal of
Family Business Strategy- https://www.slideshare.net/ciarannuim/good-practices-to-get-published?next_slideshow=1
What is in a Title
The title is the main advertisement for a paper. A great title
entices the audience to read on; a poorly-titled article may
never reach its target readers.
A paper’s title should reflect its content clearly, enabling
readers to decide whether it’s relevant for them.
Make the title catchy and keep it specific. Leave out phrases
such as ‘a study of’, ‘investigations into’, ‘observations on’;
and avoid using abbreviations and jargon.
Remember, too, that abstracting and indexing services
depend on accurate titles; they extract keywords from them
for cross-referencing.

elsevier.com/authors
Title
● Identifies the paper’s main issue.
● Begins with the paper’s subject matter.
● Is accurate, unambiguous, specific and (when possible)
complete.
● Is as short as possible.
● Is enticing and interesting; it makes people want to read
further.

Why ‘The effect of heating the albumen and vitellus of the

Gallus gallus domesticus contained in calcium carbonate in
H2O to 373.15 K’ when
‘Boiling a chicken egg in water’ says it?

What is in an Abstract
The abstract is your chance to describe your research in
200 words – so use it wisely.
Together, the title and abstract should be able to fully
represent your paper, including for use by indexing
services.
Many authors write the abstract last, so it reflects the
content accurately.
The abstract should summarize the problem or objective
of your research, and its method, results, and conclusions.
Usually an abstract does not include references, figures or
tables.

elsevier.com/authors
What is in an Abstract
Abstract should mention each significant section of the
paper, with enough detail for readers to decide whether
or not to read the whole paper.
While it’s great to make the abstract interesting, above all
it should be accurate. Do NOT promise more than your
paper delivers.

What is in an Abstract
As a class

As a team

As an individual reviewer

Pitch your abstract

● Elevator pitch, 2 minute description
● Peer evaluation (understand or not)
