Frogs are a part of a group of animals called Amphibians. Amphibians are known for living on both
land and water. They also have contain the ability to breathe underwater when they are very young,
they grow gills or breathe air when they are older. Frogs are cold-blooded, they lay their eggs in fresh
water. 88% of Amphibians are actually frogs.

Frogs has many ways in which they protect themselves from their predators. There are some frogs
that contain poison to defend themselves. The poison are toxins that the frogs release when animals
try to eat them. the predators can't eat these frogs. The frogs receive their poison from the animals
that they consume for their own good.

Picture
There are other frogs in which they can use camouflage to hide from their predators. Every frog has a
different pattern that is based on their environment. The frog blends into his surrounding until the
predator isn't able to see him anymore. Camouflage is very common to the frog population. The frogs
with the camouflage ability are usually nocturnal, awake at night and sleeping during the day.

For food frogs have teeth that are used to grind the food and they have a sticky tongue. They use their
tongues to catch their food, which are mostly flies and insects. Their are some large frogs that eat
other frogs and there are a few that eat plants.

The Life Cycle of a frog is separated into four stages. In the first stage the frogs are only eggs in the
water. Once the eggs hatch and little tadpoles come out with a tail to swim in water. That is the
second stage. After a couple of days the tadpoles undergo metamorphosis, where the tadpoles loose
their tail and grow their legs. The final stage of the cycle is when they are full grown adults and are
able to live on land until they have to reproduce and go back into the water.

In order to reproduce a male frog must contact a female frog. One way that the male frog finds the
female is by croaking. Frogs are very known for their croaking because of their ability to be really
loud. Their croaks can be heard a mile away. A female frog hears the croak and finds the male to
reproduce. Another reason that a male frog would croak is to protect his territory, when under stress,
and to forecast rain. The croaks are made by air passing through the frog's throat. There are many
deep calls or croaks depending on the actually frog.

Frogs are usually portrayed as singing frogs or as animals that walk on two legs. In most cases the
frogs are always portrayed green or brown but that fact isn't true. There are many frogs that are
different colors and different sizes. All frogs are different and unique in their own way ,but they don't
sing and dance.

Put on the safety googles and the apron.

Place the preserved frog onto the styrofoam dissecting tray. The next thing you must do is to figure
out the sex of the frog. We completed this task by locating the nuptial pad on the male'so thumb.
Every male frog has this nuptial thumb pad to be able to reproduce with their mate.

Next, you must identify and locate the external features of the frog's head. Locate the mouth, eyes,
external nares, tympani, and in tutting membrane. (Picture 1)
After turn the frog onto its back and cut the edges of the mouth and open it up.(Like the joker's
mouth is being opened). Identify and locate the following structures: the vomerine teeth, the
maxillary teeth, the tongue, the internal nares, the openings to the Eustachian tubes, the pharynx, the
esophagus, and the slit-like glottis. (Picture 2)
Locate the opening to the cloaca, which is located between the hind legs, and use the scissors to cut
along the bottom center of the body till the lip. Pull the skin back and cut along the side of each leg.
Carefully remove the skin of the frog observe the frog's muscle. (Picture 4)
From the low center of the frog's body, lift and cut the muscles and the breast bone to be able to see
the body cavity. (the frog may contain eggs if it is female). (Picture 3)
Locate the organs of the frog's anatomy structure. If you can locate the organ at first, left the liver and
the intestines to see further.
Underneath the intestines and liver identify the organs of the reproductive and urinary systems.
Observe the yellow fat bodies located with the kidneys. Locate the ureters, the testes, sperm ducts,
and the urinary bladder, if the frog is male.
Throw away your materials according to the directions of your teacher.
Wash your work area and clean your hands before exiting the lab.

conclusion

Picture
In this lab we learned the anatomy of a frog. We were given the opportunity to open a once living frog
to actually see the real life organs of the frog. We were paired up with partners and given the correct
tools to complete the lab. Prior the dissection, we were quizzed on the anatomy of the frog and my
partner and I passed. Being given this quiz allowed to enter the lab with the knowledge of the
anatomy before hand and during the dissection it was easy to locate the organs we knew. At first, it
was a struggle to look in Fido but we did it to expand our learning on the body of a frog. Thank you
Ms.Lor for providing us with this opportunity, we had so much fun learning!
