 VISION AND MISSION: This standard of
learning focuses on distinguishing
mixtures from substances through semi-
guided investigations. They realize the
importance of fair testing when conducting
investigations. They learn how to express
concentrations of solutions qualitatively and
quantitatively. Learners begin to do guided
and semi-guided investigations, making
sure that the experiment they are
conducting is a fair test. Thus,
transforming the learners to become
innovative and critical thinkers with the use
of current researches and correct
investigative characteristics for the
development of a community of pioneering
and environmentally caring stewards and
leaders.

and basic mixture, and practice safe ways
of handling acids and bases using
protective clothing and safety gear.

2. Acids and bases: Acids and bases are
compounds that one or more "loose"
hydrogens (H) or hydroxides (OH) attached
to them. These hydrogens/hydroxides do
not have a very strong bond to the
compound, and they will break free very
easily. It is these hydrogens and
hydroxides, that give acids and bases their
properties.

Session 1 Firm Up Motivation Ask the students if they can describe or give them an example of acids and bases. 5 mins
Aug. 5, 2019 You may want to demonstrate something like egg shells in vinegar. Also remind the
students that these substances are water plus something else. It is the properties of
water that create acids and bases in the first place. An acid and base are not two
totally separate chemicals but are related.
Opening Questions
1. Name the things which are sour in taste?
2. Name the things which are bitter in taste?
3. Which things are salty in taste?
Session The teacher shall present the objectives for the day. At the end of the session, the 3 mins

 To enable the students to know about acid, base and salts.

Transition The teacher will then proceed to present the Essential Question of the lesson. 2 mins

Learning Group Activity: 15 mins
Activities The teacher will assign to the students to enlist the things which are sour in taste to
every group. The teacher will write down the name of things according to the students
on the blackboard. On the basis of this activity the teacher will ask the students, why
these are sour in taste? Most of the students are unable to give the answer of this
question. Now the teacher will deliver her content matter to the students.

Enrichment The students will list at least 5 common acids and basis found in their home and 15 mins
and Deepen environment.

mixtures; thou shalt not sow thy field with mixtures, neither shalt thou wear garments
of a mixture of different things.

Process Questions:
1. Which part of the bible text is the closest to the discussion? Explain.
2. How can we relate the message of the text to what we have done today?
3. As an Augustinian, how can knowing the different types of mixtures be of good
use to you in the future?

Essential Question: What can acids and bases do alone or together?

The teacher will elicit answers from the students and take note of them and process
the answers to arrive at the enduring understanding.
Assessment a. Have students draw and label the pH scale without looking at their notes. 10 mins
b. Give examples of biological buffers and ask the students to explain how they work.
c. Student completion of “Acids, Bases, and the pH Scale” handouts will assess the
above objectives.
