I. INTRODUCTION

People live in the world full of communication. The importance of communication can

be found in the context of human being. As a human being manages his life in the

interaction between the other members of the society, communication is inevitable.

According to Ashley P. (2017), communication is the act of one or more persons

conveying one information to one another. The content of the communication can be

facts, ideas, concepts, emotions and attitude. The communication occurs in two different

forms: written and oral. The ability to speak English language reflects a personality, self-

images and express thoughts in a real time. These days, due to global trend the ability

of communication in English is needed. Speaking English allows you to actually

broaden your world, from job opportunities to the ability to relate to people from every

country (Tunariu, 2017).

However, it is not always easy task for people to use English as a second

language to be able to speak to the level of native speaker. According to the study of

Henna Paaki (2013), a 51-year old Finnish learner of English says that speaking English

is a difficult task. They understand the language and knows a lot about its grammar and

lexicon, but when they speak, they seemed to be at loss for words. This is the problem

that other people have noticed as well. Of course, not all learners struggle with

speaking; there is good reason to research the matter. More insight into this might be

able to help develop the teaching of English speech production and thus the abilities of

English learners. For example, according to Tatham and Morton (2006) many people

report that they can understand a language, but they cannot speak it. There are also
other countries where people experience the same phenomenon, for example in the

Japanese context it seems that may people have difficulties in speaking English.

This is clearly a problem, because the aim of English language education is to

provide learners with capabilities to understand the language and the ability to write and

speak. If learners are not able to speak English, this aim has not been fully achieved.

The importance of identifying the barriers is because in this way, we will be aware of the

problem arising when communicating. So that the next time you’ll communicate,

improvements will be made. The question is what will be the external factors for the

students to use it as their means of communicating? Thus, it is necessary to study this

issue in order to what are the different challenges or hindrances faced by the students

to use English language when it comes to speaking and writing.


STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Generally, the study aims to determine the difficulties on using English language

within the students of Grade 12 HUMSS in Southern Luzon College, S.Y 2018-2019.

Specifically, it aims to answer these questions

a. Are the means of communication between the students of Grade 12- HUMSS

affects their English fluency?

b. Does Grade 12- HUMSS language used at home (Mother Tongue) affect their

English fluency?

c. Does environment can be considered a barrier regarding Grade 12- HUMSS

English fluency?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

Out of many Grade 12 HUMSS students of Southern Luzon College, 50 students

will be used as respondents in conducting the survey. The study will not accommodate

Grade 11 students or lower classman. The main purpose of this research is to

determine the different challenges or hindrances faced by the students when using

English language in terms of verbal and written. This study will start from July 2019 until

October 2019 S.Y. 2019-2020.


SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will benefit the following;

Students- This study will help the students to identify the hindrances or barriers why

they’re having difficulty on the same language.

Teachers- This study will help the teachers discover the difficulties faced by their

students with regards English language in order to come up with an effective teaching

technique, methods and strategies.

Future Researcher- This study will help the future researchers to research more about

the topic and add some details.
