Socialization is the process wherein people learn the rules of the society.

It was important
to acknowledge that socialization is learning the culture and developing our sense of self as a way of
knowing our belonging to the society. As we know it, to be a proficient member of society, we must
understand that we need to interact to each other in order for us to socialize. Through socialization with
others, we will be able to acquire the basic knowledge on how to function as an individual to the society.
As for what happened to Chuck Noland, what would be the result if we deprive a person from socializing
and what happened when agents of socialization were no longer present to the environment he never chose.

Chuck Noland was a proficient member of his society. He was an employee of a company
where time management is a vital work in order for him to be a fully effective member of his company.
The company where he belongs provide courier delivery services which requires tight time management in
order for them to operate. Like in the society, Chuck was also a part of this society which requires a rigid
time management in order for him to fit in the company. He was always aware of what will happen in a
particular time and very keen to the details of it. From this view, this is the society working on him. The
company which provide him this culture has molded him to be this type of person in order for him to fit to
the company. Even it is evidently shown in the movie, one of the agents of socialization in the movie was
his family in the character of Kelly. Kelly and Chuck were basically a couple and as a couple who were
committed to their line of work, they were both pressure by their peers to be married. American norms can
says that marriage can be a lifelong goal. Americans valued marriage but in the movie, Chuck waited for
the right time to propose to Kelly until the time before Kelly can finish his doctorate degree. It means that
they waited for a long time so that they can finally tie a knot. This can be supported by a research
sociological research that says that majority of American prefer society is just as well off if people have
priorities other than marriage and children. (Pew Research Center Survey, 2014)

What do Americans think about Russians after cold war? This is the question that bothers me
after I watched the scene of Nikolo and Chuck and other Russian workers. Considering the possible time
table of the movie, the setting of the movie was probable in the year of 1995 – 2000 which happened to be
the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of U.S.S.R, It is quite remarkably for me to notice that the
Russians in the movie were under the administration of an American citizen in the character of Chuck
Noland. Ethnocentrism was the first thing that I remember during this part of the movie. As I know it,
Americans and Russians were both ethnocentric and this statement was manifested by what happened in
Cold War. Russian wants to be dominant so as Americans. Agents of Socialization also takes part in this
movie such as the Americans use mass media in order for them to promote their culture (manifested by
James Bond spy movies). In the movie, Chuck Noland was facilitating the delivery team of the FedEx in
Russia. The culture of an American company was inhibited in him which I think was his mechanism to
coop out to the setting dominated by Russians. It was quite fascinating for me to see that in the movie, there
were no indication of culture shock to him. It is what I think that the Russians was the people and the
dominant people in the company at that time in Russia that adopted the culture of the company about time
management. My opinion is, Russians were family dependent brought by Communism ( Wagner,n.d) so in
order for them to fully support their family, they must endure the fact that they are governed by an
American.

The movie was about the absence of a society. It reflects how man behave in a society where
agents of socialization was missing. On the earlier part of the movie, Chuck was seen as a part of a society.
He do things what a normal person do such as socializing with other people. Aside from this, Chuck also
seems to value the people around him. In the movie, Chuck showed his care for his friend Stan by telling
him that he will consult the doctor he knew to help his friend find a specialist for his sick wife. This is
Chuck valuing his others and being part of the society. After the plane crash, Chuck was in the moment of
despair, he has no one to talk to and no one to express how he felt. This is where he began to experience
deprivation of social interaction. With no family to talk to, no school where basic island survival knowledge
can be learnt, no peers to have share, and no mass media to inform him what happen to the mainland, Chuck
was left with nothing but his own. The absence of agents of socialization was the turning point where he
resides to talking to Wilson, a volleyball. The effect of Wilson was beneficial in order for him to socialize
with an imaginary person. This help him to coop for the missing link of socialization, his peers and family.
Wilson serve his as a imaginary person that helped him to figure out what is right and what is wrong. Upon
his arrival in the island, Wilson was fundamental accompany which substitute the role of the family as the
fundamental part of socialization. As also seen in the movie, Wilson seems to provide technical knowledge
to Chuck by giving him some technical knowledge such as the number of twigs needed in order for the boat
to be stabilize. This make him as agent in the form of school.

The time has come and Chuck was a member of the society again. For 4 years, he were
deprived from the presence of human and this made him difficult for him to socialize again. Mass media
have spread the news of his existence but he is not happy to socialize again knowing that the love of his life
is now a married person. It was hard for him specially seeing his car again and remembering how this car
became part of a beautiful memory of their passionate love. This is where symbolic interaction became
relevant. The car became the symbol of their happiest times but now, it is the symbol of their darkest day
( the night he left) and loneliness that the airplane and 4 years of desolation have gave to Chuck.
