Smith Goes to Washington - Tips and Tricks

Playing as Colorado, the purpose of this scenario is to get your Command Vehicle to Washington DC
within 9 Months so that you can influence the upcoming federal election. The problem is, many of the
states between you and Washington will not let you travel through their territory and Illinois will actually
shoot at you if you come within range. SPOILER ALERT : What follows are some ways that the scenario
can be played and only you can decide which one is right for you as a "Supreme Ruler" wannabe!

The casual player...

Will probably decide that they can make a few alliances but then will have to fight their way through some
of the states to reach their destination on time.

The careful player...

Will look at all the possible routes to Washington and discover that the direct path is likely the most
dangerous. You are already Allied with Minnesota and Michigan and without too much effort
diplomatically, you should be able to reach Formal Alliances with Wyoming, South Dakota, Ohio,
Pennsylvania and Maryland. The problem is that neither Ontario nor Wisconsin are interested in an
alliance with you so you can't just drive to your destination in DC. That leaves northern Wisconsin as the
path of least resistance and shortest distance to get through. Drive your Command Vehicle to northern
Minnesota, wait until it has a full resupply of fuel, declare war on Wisconsin and then try to scoot across
to Michigan where you can continue your journey unmolested.

In enemy territory, there are no gas stations...

If, as is quite likely, your Command Vehicle then runs out of gas before it makes it to Michigan, you'll have
no choice but to quickly bring in support vehicles to try and rescue it before it is destroyed.

The experienced player...

No Alliance with Wisconsin or Ontario? No problem! Drive your Command Vehicle to Minnesota, just
north of the western end of Lake Superior. Once there, select your Command Vehicle and right click on
Michigan's territory south of Lake Superior. Choose the command "Air Transp" and watch as one of you
transport helicopters comes to the assistance of your Command Vehicle, loads it up and carries it accross
the lake. Once in Michigan, you can have a nice safe drive to your destination.

The lesson today...

Beginners who think that all situations in the game will deteriorate into military confrontations are
mistaken. This scenario is quite challenging to win if you attempt to through military might. However,
knowing what military equipment is available to you and by practicing diplomacy, you can get to your
destination in about a week without firing a shot! Obviously Diplomacy is not always the answer, but it is
important to explore your diplomatic opportunities before you resort to military action.
