B4 Classroom Guide
Before School:
Upon arrival, students will hang backpack, sit quietly, and prepare for their morning routine.
Students will have quiet conversations while waiting for school to start. The door may open at 7:45
for a “soft start” to read morning message, get name tag, or talk with the teacher. School begins
at 8:00am. If the student is not in class by 8:00, they must report to the office first to obtain an
orange tardy card. Please note- any students arriving to school before 7:45am should be
supervised (parent/ guardian or morning care) as there will no supervision- responsibility will be on
the family (refer to school handbook).
Morning Routine:
When school begins at 8:00am, students will begin their morning routine and skills warm up.
- Attendance - Check weekly/daily schedule
- Greet teacher at the door -Turn in any homefun and mail
- STAR Binder in cubby - Prepare materials if needed
- Water bottle at designated area - Begin skills warm up until 8:15
- Come to carpet for morning meeting at 8:15
Morning Meeting:
Morning meeting is a time to build our community and ohana. We will talk about different topics
chosen both by the students and teacher. Students will share at the meeting depending on the
sharing topic for the week on their assigned sharing day and end the meeting with a celebration
and activity.
Closing Routine:
At the end of the day, students will:
-Clean up work area - Write homefun (Mondays or as needed)
- Pack STAR Binder & water bottle in backpack - Come to carpet for closing meeting
Closing Meeting:
Closing allows the students to reflect about the day together and independently. They will receive
reminders and possible last minute announcements. After they have cleaned up and have packed
up, we will close with a circle for “One Word & a Heartbeat.” One word describes the day and the
heartbeat is of love and care for one another and our learning.
Leader of the Pack (Student of the Week):
Each week, students will nominate a student(s) who showed the best 4th grade behavior, choices,
habits, and changes and exhibits school’s vision elements. We will consider the following: Who was
responsible? Who was kind and helpful? Who showed independence? Who was able to make positive
changes? Who practiced the vision elements? They will be Leader of the Pack for the week (Student
of the Week). The Leader of the Pack for the Week will get to sit at a VIP table.
Classroom Management: Behavior Chart
We will be learning it is okay to forget or make mistakes as long as we learn from them. As a class,
we will continually discuss it is okay to get friendly reminders from friends or the teacher to help
us make a better choice and positive 4th grade changes. When students are not doing their job they
will get a -10 penalty reminder or a +10 gain for getting a positive compliment. Students will move a
clothespin up and down on the behavior chart. Positive earns money. Negative loses money. For
Paws & Think Reminders, student will adjust their behavior or ask the teacher for help. Student will
give own consequence based on the list of consequences developed by the class. The student may
directly see the Assistant Head of School, depending on how disruptive or unsafe the student’s
choice is.
Breaks (Bathroom, Water, Stretching):
The class is expected to use the bathroom or drink water during recess and extended breaks,
however, they will also be given frequent breaks or as needed. Breaks include bathroom, water,
stretching, snacks, and brain breaks. Students are also asked to stretch legs or arms during a
quick transition.
Birthdays:
Birthdays are special and can be celebrated in the classroom. If you would like to bring special
treats for your child’s birthday, just let me know 24-48 hrs. in advance so I can make any proper
arrangements. Please take into consideration some students may have allergies to nuts, lactose/
dairy, or gluten.
STAR Binder/ Homefun:
Students are expected to take home and return STAR Binder to school everyday. They are
responsible for staying organized and using their planner to help stay organized. Homefun is
designed to extend learning to home. There will be no/limited homefun this year. Your child will be
encouraged to read daily. Alternate homefun activities will be provided.
Incomplete classwork/ homefun:
In 4th grade, we stress the importance of independence and responsibility. Students will learn how
to be in charge of their learning, including facing the consequences of any incomplete work and
enjoying the incentives as well. Homefun can include: encourage daily reading, extension activities,
and alternate activities to nurture a child’s development and home to school connections.
B4 Weekly and Weekly Reflection Notebook:
The B4 Weekly is a weekly newsletter designed as a glimpse of happenings for the week and will be
sent out Sundays via email. It may include blogs/vlogs from students. They will include reminders
and a short note from the teacher and will be adjusted as needed. Weekly Reflections will be
completed during class time on Friday afternoon (or as homefun if not completed) in a notebook. It
will be used as a tool to help with self reflection about behavior and learning. The Weekly Reflection
Notebook will be due on Mondays with response from parent/guardian.
Classroom Economy
Students will earn a “paycheck” weekly based on their assigned classroom job (kuleana). Students
will apply for a job and keep a job for an extended period of time. Students may be fired/ rehired,
receive fines, and/or receive bonuses. Students will pay taxes and rent. There will also be options
to shop at the B4 Store, participate in auctions, or save their money.
Flexible Classroom Seating & Freedom with Responsibility
Students will have freedom to move around and have discussions with peers as appropriate, or
unless otherwise restricted by the teacher. This is designed to help them learn their own learning
preferences for seating and independent, partner, or group work.
B4 Classroom Guide will be updated as needed.
