How bullying can affect a child’s growth and development

Back ground
Bullying, and it’s persistent, underlying damage to the mental health of both the
victims and the perpetrators is making a strong case for intervention. No longer can it be
viewed as the inevitable trials of the playground, but rather as a serious form of
childhood abuse, the negative effects of which ripple throughout the lives of those who
experience it unchecked.
Perhaps the most striking conclusion we can draw from these studies is that bullying
is no longer merely an issue associated with children. It is a societal issue, a cultural
issue; one with roots extending back generations, built from a web of cause-and-effect
chains that could take generations to sort through. The positive side is that we’re getting
closer to identifying the cause of the psychological and emotional pain that shapes the
lives of the individuals who comprise our society. Now we can start to address the
wounds more directly and limit the crippling nature of these attacks.
