Tutorial sheet-1(09-08-2019) to be submitted next week

1. In Young's experiment, a pair of slits separated by a distance of 0.9 mm is placed at a distance of 1.0 m from
the screen. The tenth bright fringe is at a distance of .6 mm from the centre of the fringe pattern. What is the
wavelength of light used? If the entire experimental set up is immersed in a medium of refractive index μ, the
tenth bright fringe is found to be at a distance of .45 mm from the centre of the fringe pattern. Find μ.

2. In a double slit experiment, interference fringes of width w are obtained with blue light of wavelength 4861A o.
Find the fringe width when the blue light is replaced with red light of wavelength 6563Ao and the entire
experimental set up is simultaneously immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.35.

3. Two whistles situated 1 m apart and having the same frequency are sounded simultaneously. An observer
moving along a line parallel to the line joining the whistles and at a distance of 10 m from it, finds a series of
places of maximum sound intensity at 2.2 m apart. If the speed of sound in air is 330 ms -1, find the frequency of
the whistles. If the sources of sound are replaced by two light sources and the distances suitably adjusted, will
the optical interference pattern be observed? Explain your answer.
4. A laser beam of wavelength 6300 Ao is incident on a pair of slits and produces an interference pattern in which
the bright fringes are separated by 8.3 mm. A second light produces an interference pattern of fringe separation
7.6 mm. Find the wavelength of the second light.
5. Consider interference between two sources of intensities I and 4I Obtain intensities at points where the phase
difference is

i. /2
ii.

6. Two slits in Young's experiment have widths in the ratio 1:36. Deduce the ratio of intensities at the maxima and
minima in the pattern.
7. Interference fringes were produced by Young's double slit method using light of wavelength 6 x 10 -7 m. When a
film of material 3.6 x 10-3 cm thick was placed over one of the slits the fringe pattern was displaced by a
distance equal to thirty times that between two adjacent fringes. Calculate the refractive index of the material.

8.
A biprism is placed 5 cm from a slit illuminated by Na light. The width of the fringes obtained on the screen 75
cm from the biprism is 0.009424 cm. What is the distance between the two coherent sources?

9. A biprism forms interference fringes with monochromatic light of wavelength 5450 Å. On introducing a thin
glass plate (µ = 1.5) in the path of one of the interfering beams, the central fringe shifts to the position
previously occupied by the third bright fringe. Does the fringe width change? Find the thickness of the plate.

10. Two coherent sources, whose intensity ration is 9:4, produce interference fringes. Deduce the ratio of maximum
to minimum intensity of the fringe system.

11. In a double slit experiment, let the two wavelengths of light be 4500 Å and 5500 Å. The distance between the
source and screen is 2 m and the distance between the slits is 0.03 mm. Find the separation between the third
order bright fringes due to the given two wavelengths.
