The apparatus and its Components

1. Channel – The main part of the apparatus. This is where the water flows from its bottom

part to the top.

2. Weirs and Spillway – These are provided with the channel and can be manually inserted

in the channel.

3. Pump – Located under the end part of the channel.

4. Tank – This is where the water used in the channel is stored.

5. Height sensor- it is a removable height sensor.

How to operate the apparatus?

1. Remove the top part of the tank.

Removing the top part of the tank makes it easier to fill the bottom part with water.

2. Fill the bottom part of the tank.

Fill the tank until it reaches the optimum water level mark. Make sure that the level of the

water in the tank is higher than height of the pump to make sure it will not suck air in that

might cause overheating.

3. Put back the upper part of the tank.

Putting the top part of the tank is necessary as the piezometer is located there.

4. Start the pump.

Plug-in the electric pump and turn it on using the switch located at the bottom end part of

the channel. Let the bottom part of the channel be filled with water.

5. Let the water flow regulate.

This allows the flow to be constant throughout the channel.

6. Insert accessories.

Insert different accessories needed for experiments. After inserting the accessory needed

put an acrylic clip to allow the channel to be compressed back to its original dimension and

to assure there will be no flow under and at the sides of the accessories.

7. Place the height sensor above the channel.

Put the sensor on the designated part where the head is needed to be measured.

8. Turn off the pump.

Let the water above the channel flow back to the tank.

9. Drain the channel.

Place a bucket or connect a 1-inch hose below the drain and put the water drained back to

the tank or dispose the water.

How to use the Height meter?

1. Place the channel.

Place the height meter above the designated position.

2. Loosen the screw.

Loosen the screw to allow the movement of the meter.

3. Turn on the sensor.

Power the height meter by pressing the “ON” button then select the unit system needed by

pressing the “mm/inch” conversion button. Calibrate the meter by pressing the zero.

4. Measure the height.

Point the tip part of the depth measuring blade above the water then set it again to zero.

Apply normal pressure only while sliding the meter for too much pressure might interrupt

and damage the it.

5. Remove and place on a safe place.

After using the meter dismantle and put it on a safe place.

Cleaning and Maintenance

For the apparatus mainly deals with the flow of water, it is necessary to keep it maintained

to avoid leaks in the channel. Here are some ways to keep the channel clean and free from leaks.

1. Always keep the apparatus clean.

2. Clean the apparatus on the outside part and the top part only. Do not attempt to clean the

bottom part of the channel by removing the middle acrylic sheet. It is connected by screws

and silicone adhesive and removing it might damage the apparatus.

3. To clean the bottom part, simply let the apparatus operate without inserting accessories.

The flow of the water cleanses the bottom part so there is no need to open the lower part

of the apparatus.

4. Replace the water in the apparatus regularly. In this way, build-up of moss and rust is

 Proper handling

1. Don’t fit accessories in the channel which are not originally part of the study. If a

foreign accessory should be inserted, make sure to consult the professor in charge to

avoid damage.

2. Keep the apparatus in an area with mild or cold temperature. Avoid putting the channel

in hot places for it is mostly made up of acrylic sheet which is a kind of plastic and may

loosen the adhesive used.

3. Always make sure that there is enough water to go around the channel.

4. Always check the upper tank of the channel and don’t let it overflow.

5. Keep the pump dry at all times to avoid electrical problems.

6. Do not exert too much force on the apparatus when inserting accessories. Put oil on the

side of the accessories to make it slide in easier.

7. Do not pull the acrylic sheets from the side extensively. Acrylic is a fragile material. It

can break easily.

 Inspection and repairs

1. Always inspect the apparatus before, during, and after use.

2. Parts which are damaged should be fixed as soon as possible to make sure that no other

problem arises due to the damaged part.

Height meter:

For the safety and proper care of the meter, please read these instructions and retain them for future

1. Keep the meter clean and dry.

2. To clean, use slightly damp cotton fabrics. Do not use acetone or abrasive cleaners.
3. In order to save battery power, turn off the meter when not in use.

4. Always place it on a safe and dry place, for dropping, hitting, and spilling water on the

LCD part of the height meter might cause damage and short circuit.
