    Cancer pain is a significant problem, with moderate to severe pain experienced by 40-50% of cancer patients and very severe pain in 25-30% of terminal patients. Over 65% of cancer pain is caused directly by the cancer, while 25% is caused by anticancer treatments and less than 10% is coincidental. It is important to properly assess cancer pain through obtaining a thorough pain history including location, intensity, quality, temporal patterns, aggravating/alleviating factors, meaning of pain, and medication history. Pain intensity can be measured with unidimensional scales like numeric rating scales or multidimensional scales like the Brief Pain Inventory and McGill Pain Questionnaire.
