National Institute of Technology Durgapur
(formerly Regional Engineering College,
Durgapur), has a glorious past and illustrious
present. It has its foundation in the Regional
Engineering College, Durgapur, which was
instituted to function as a pace setter for
engineering education in the country and to
foster national integration. It is a fully-funded
premier technological institution of the
Government of India and is administered by an
autonomous Board of Governors.
Of late, the city is under tremendous growth in
industrial and educational expansion. SAIL-DSP
and ASP are two major industries along with
secondary sponge iron units power plants by
DVC; NSPCL and an export promotion park.
The MME department of N.I.T Durgapur
has been recognized as centre of Advanced study
and has excellent tradition of imparting quality
education and research in the entire gamut of
metallurgical education ranging from primary
metal production to new developments in metals
and materials engineering. This Department has
the distinction of having STEEL CHAIR
PROFESSOR sponsored by Ministry of Steel
Government of India.
Technical Education Quality Improvement
Programme : (TEQIP) is a world bank funded
project aiming at improving the technical
education of the country and uplifting the
research quality. It helps to fund innovative
projects in the academic institutions and
developing laboratory facilities needed to pursue
research activities.
Course Theme
The demand of materials in complex service
conditions has led to the rapid advances in the
design and development of materials and
associated technologies. There have been many
recent developments in the field of metallurgy
and materials technology, particularly in the
areas of processing, characterization and
application of materials. Various new materials
have been developed for advanced applications.
The theme of linking properties with structure
plays a key role in the systematic development of
materials, their behaviour in practical
applications and understanding of materials
processing technologies. So, advancement in
theoretical and experimental research on
materials is the building block for all
technological advances.
In this context, Metallurgical and Materials
Engineering Department of NIT Durgapur, under
the aegis of TEQIP-II, will organise a five days'
short term course on "Metallurgy and
Materials Technology" (MMT-2013).
Course Content
The proposed topics of discussion in the short
term course include but are not restricted to:

Treatment of Steel
• Mechanical Behaviour of Materials
• Materials Characterization
• Functional Materials
• Foundation of Nano Technology
• Thermodynamics and Diffusion of Materials
• Advancement in Iron and Steel Making
• Solidification and Casting of non ferrous
metals
• Advanced Welding Technology
• Processing of components by Powder
Metallurgy
• Mathematical Modelling of Metallurgical
Processes.
• Environmental Degradation of Materials
Eligibility for Participation
The program is open to engineering professionals
from industries, faculties from polytechnic
institutes, engineering colleges, universities,
R&D organizations and research scholars / JRF /
SRF from any research organization.
Maximum no. of participants: 100
Accommodation
Outstation candidates may be provided institute
guest house on ‘first come first serve’ basis.

1) Participants from Industries: Rs. 8,000/-
2) Participants from research and academic
Institute: Rs. 5,000/-
3) Research Scholars/JRF/SRF : Rs. 1,000/-
(Identity Card is compulsory & No discount
Discount of 30% is permissible ( either/or):
(i) For 3 or more participants from the same
organization
(ii) For organizations having MOU with NIT
Durgapur
(iii) For organizations having recruited graduates
from campus interview from N.I.T Durgapur
within last 3 years.
Registration fees includes workshop kits, study
material refreshment lunch.

Filled-in Registration Form along with a demand
draft in favour of “The Director, N.I.T Durgapur”
payable at SBI, R.E. COLLEGE, Durgapur should
be sent to Mr. S. Pramanik or Dr. M. M. Ghosh, the
coordinators of the course. The registration
proforma may be photocopied if necessary.
