ABSTRACT
This monograph for Magnesium Perchlorate, Desiccant provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general
description including typical appearance, applications, change in state (approximate), and aqueous solubility. The
monograph also details the following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS
Reagent Grade specifications including: Suitability for Moisture Absorption, Titrable Free Acid, Titrable Base, and Loss
on Drying. Special caution is advised for the handling or testing of this substance.

TESTS
Suitability for Moisture Absorption
Weigh about 2 g in a tared, 50 mL weighing bottle having a diameter of 50 mm and a height of 30 mm. Place the bottle, with
cover removed, for at least 16 h in a closed container in which the atmosphere possesses a relative humidity of 85%,
maintained by equilibrium with sulfuric acid having a specific gravity of 1.16. The increase in weight should not be less than
25%.

Titrable Free Acid and Titrable Base

Dissolve 2.0 g in 25 mL of water, and add 0.15 mL of methyl orange indicator solution. Any red color produced should be
changed to yellow by the addition of not more than 1.0 mL of 0.01 N sodium hydroxide (titrable free acid). If a yellow color
is produced, not more than 5.0 mL of 0.01 N hydrochloric acid should be required to produce a red color (titrable base).

Loss on Drying

C a u t i o n : Do not dry the sample in the presence of any organic material.

Weigh accurately about 1 g, and dry at 190 ± 10 °C to constant weight. Calculate the loss in weight as percent water.
