II. Summary

Spiral Progression approach in teaching sciences in both private and public high school
had been a controversial issue. The study assessed the implementation of the said curriculum
using the well-mixed method design in which interviews, questionnaires and observation were
used to gather data. The study was conducted in 4 private and 2 public schools within Cavite
area. The data were processed, analyzed and interpreted using the following statistical tools:
frequency, percentage, means, “Goodness of Fit” test and Chi- Square.

The main philosophies behind Spiral Progression approach are constructivism,

progressivism and behaviorism. It is said to be a “child-centered approach” and uses authentic
assessment instead of traditional classroom assessment. It was found out that the majority of
science specialization is in biology. Specifically it is biology in private school and chemistry in
public schools. Both private and public school teachers perceive that sometimes spiral
progression in science has advantage and disadvantages. However, private school teachers are
more inclined to perceive that spiral progression is more advantageous than disadvantageous.
Both private and public school teachers observe that sometimes and often spiral progression is
effective in teaching science courses. The most commonly used and most effective teaching
strategies are discovery/ inquiry learning, collaborative learning and experiential learning. The
study found out that the teachers are having a hard time adapting to the new approach but they
also believe that through the new curriculum we can create globally competitive and dynamic
learners.

III. Review and Evaluate

The authors, Jelli Ann Resurreccion and Jonathan Adanza are students of St. Dominic
College of Asia. I believe the author used appropriate methods which are quantitative –
qualitative research design in gathering evidences. The author provided an accurate evidence and
the use and interpretation of this evidence lead the reader to the same conclusion. A logical
argument was built by the author and I found no other evidence that would support a counter-
argument. The article and the evidence are still valid and not outdated. Likewise, the author was
successful in making his/her point in the study.
IV. Conclusion

I agree with the author hence they used a scientific method and the evidences are well
presented. Overall, the study is in-depth and gave light to the doubts I had with regards to the
implementation of the spiral progression approach specifically the science subject.
