I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson at least 75% of the students will be able to;
a. Locate the metallic resources deposits in the Philippines
b. identify the provinces which are rich or nit rich in mineral deposits across the country;
and
c. cite the importance of minerals in our daily living.
II. Lesson
Quarter 4: Earth and Space
Module 1: The Philippine Environment
Topic: Where are the mineral deposits in the Philippines (Part I)
Concept: Mineral deposits can be classified into two types: metallic and non-metallic.
The Philippines has metallic mineral deposits. They are found near volcanoes and trenches.
These metals are used in many way the important metallic mineral found in carious part of the
Philippines include gold, copper, iron, chromite, nickel, cobalt, and platinum. The most
productive copper and gold producers in the Philippines are found in Baguio, the province of
Benguet, and in Surigao-Davao areas. Major producer of nickel are in Palawan and in Surigao.
Metals are important. The properties of metal make them useful for specific purposes, example
Iron is the main material for steel bars used in buildings and road construction. Copper is used in
making electrical wires. Nickel is mixed with copper or other metal to form stainless cooking
wares. Gold is important in making jewellery. The Philippines has also varied non-metallic
resources including sand and gravel, limestone, marble, clay and other quarry materials. The
Philippines is listed as the 5th mineral country in the world, 3rd in gold reserves, 4th in copper and
5th in nickel, the richness of the Philippines in terms of mineral resources is being attributed to its
location in the so-called Pacific ring of fire. This areas is associated with over 450 volcanoes and
is home to approximately 75% of the world’s active volcanoes.

V. Lesson Proper
Routine Check
- Opening prayer, greetings, checking of cleanliness, checking of attendance
Review
Directions: Answer the following questions.
1. What do we call a process of breaking down rocks in smaller pieces by a natural process?
- weathering.
2. What are the factors that act together on rocks to form soil?
- Temperature, Rainfall, Climate
3. How does the 1st process of turning rocks into soil looks like?
4. How does the 2nd process of turning rocks into soil looks like?
5. What are the elements present in the 4th process of weathering?

Unlocking of difficulties.
Directions: Complete the word/s
M_NER_LS – Is a naturally occurring, inorganic crystalline solid with a definite internal
structure and chemical composition.
A_TIV_VOL_AN_ - Is a volcanoes that has at least one eruption during the past 10,000 years.
IN_CTI_E_OLCA_O – Is a volcano that has no record of eruption and considered as extinct.

A. Engage
Directions: Using a Flash card tell the name of the following elements
1. Au
2. Cr
3. Cu
4. Fe
5. Mn
6. Ni

B. Explore
Activity 1: Where are the mineral deposits in the Philippines (Part 1)
Materials
Figure 9: Metallic Deposits Map of the Philippines
Figure 10: Map of Trenches and Faults in the Philippines
Figure 11: Map of Volcanoes in the Philippines
2 pieces of plastic sheet used for book cover, same size as a book page
Marking pens (two colors, if possible)
Procedures
Part I
1. Familiarize yourself with the physical map of the Philippines. Identify specific places of
interest to you in the different regions.
2. In your notebook, make a four-column table with headings similar to Table 1.

3. As a group, study the Metallic Deposits Map of the Philippines. See Figure 9. In the map you
will see symbols of metals. Fill in the information needed in Columns 1 and 2 of your own table.
4. Check with each other if you have correctly written the correct words for the symbol of the
metals. Add as many rows as there are kinds of metals in the map.
5. Analyze the data in Table 1.
Q1. Identify five metals which are most abundant across the country. Put a number on this metal
(1 for most abundant, 2 next abundant, and so on).
Q2. Record in Column 3 where the five most abundant metals are located.

C. Explain
Teacher: What are the metals which are most abundant across the country?
Students: Gold, Chromium, Copper, Iron, Manganese, and Nickel
Teacher: Very good. Where the five most abundant metals are located?
Students: Marinduque, Zambales, Negros Occidental, Camarines Norte, Surigao del Norte.
Teacher: Excellent. What geological structures are found near the location of the metallic
deposits?
Students: The geological structures found near the location of metallic deposits are trenches,
faults, and volcanoes.
Teacher: Excellent, Where can you found many mineral deposits?
Students: Near the volcano.
Teacher: Very good.
D. Elaborate
Why do you think Philippines have bounty of mineral deposits?
E. Evaluate
Directions: where do you think I’m made up of?

IV. Assignment
Identify the different volcanoes and mineral deposits that can be found in your province.
