Political Science

 the branch of knowledge that deals with systems of government; the


analysis of political activity and behavior
 is a social science which deals with systems of governance, and the
analysis of political activities, political thoughts, and political behavior. It
deals extensively with the theory and practice of politics which is
commonly thought of as determining of the distribution of power and
resources
 Political science is the study of politics and power from domestic,
international, and comparative perspectives. It entails
understanding political ideas, ideologies, institutions, policies, processes,
and behavior, as well as groups, classes, government, diplomacy, law,
strategy, and war

Political Science in the Philippines

 Political Science in the Philippines is empirical (practical or realistic) and


comprehensive (broad).
 According to Agpalo (1998) Philippine Political Science is shaped not only
by history but by the contribution of heroes during Philippine Revolution
from 1880 – 1991.
 Philippine Political Sciance is Philosophical ( Logical, Theoretical or
Rational) and Normative (Fomal) (the first definition of PolScie)

Five Illustrados or Intellectuals:


 Jose P. Rizal
 Graciano Lopez Jaena
 Marcelo H. del Pilar
 Emilio Jacinto
 Apolinario Mabini

Although the major Illustrados or intellectuals of the Propaganda


Movement and the Philippine Revolution during the period 1880 –
1991, they are actually the fathers of Philippine Political Science

Del Pilar, Rizal, Jacinto and Mabini – these four authors were the
pioneers of the Philippine Political Science, for they had published
between 1889 – 1898 works of systematic exposition and analysis
of a very important aspect of Philippine Political Science.

 The cession of the Philippines by Spain to the United States in 1898 and
the defeat of the Filipinos in the Filipino – American War in 1901. The
meaning of Political Science was changed into:

 The shift from the philosophical or normative approach to


Legalistic – Institutional and Pragmatic Approaches, with a
view to developing a science of the government.
A Political Scientist studies political and governmental behavior as a career,
in order to aid campaigns in elections, analyze voting patterns for lobbyists,
and create models to predict future political trends.

Is Political Science important?

 The purpose of our major is to deepen knowledge and understanding of


one of the most powerful forces operating on people, communities and
corporations today, namely government and politics in the USA and
around the world. This knowledge and understanding is valuable for all
citizens.

How is Political Science a science?


 Like other social sciences, political science uses a “scientific”
approach, meaning that political scientists approach their study in an
objective, rational, and systematic manner. Some political
scientists focus on abstract and theoretical questions, while others study
particular government policies and their effects.
