Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM

Introduction

In every school there is a learner, a learner that has an ambition in accomplishing

academic performance, growing independently and applying learnings in real life
situations are not just an example. A learner that has a potential in participating all the
activities in school. You cannot just learn by simply being told. Learning needs a frequent
practice. Educational Institution is liable for it. Institution means an established
organization it is composed of different curricula and divided into different sections.
Subject teachers and advisers are included in a section but teachers are unusable or
useless without students. Students play vital roles in terms of education. Nowadays,
performances of a student happened negatively, there’s a lot of teachers who are
problematic because of their students. Problems that can really affect academic
performances like social media that gives a big impact on a student.

Social Media can be considered as a website or an application that’ll let its users
socialize by the use of their computers, laptops, cell phones, and another medium that
can access social media. In short, it connects people much easier.

Social media connects people, no matter how far, and what age you are, it
connects a person to another person with just a simple click, you can either call or video
call, chat or message that eloquent someone, and update your status to let your friends
family and acquaintances know how great or bad your life has been going. It even makes
your life as a student more efficient, you can ask questions to your classmates and
teachers if you're having trouble understanding your homework and projects.

It may be helpful in some ways; however, it may affect your school life for
sometimes most of the students that are allowed to bring their phones in their class are
on their phones instead of listening to their teachers discussions, and it also takes up
there in making their projects leaving them only a short amount of time to finish their
project just because their time and focus is divided into social media. (D’avila, 2016)

This study aims to understand the addiction of teenagers to social media and how
this addiction affects their focus on their studies. This study also seeks to discover the
factors that influence the teenagers on habitually using too much social media. The
results could aid in identifying underlying factors that hinder in the students in performing
adequately in their studies as well as formulating solutions for the problems involving the
habitual use of social media.

Theoretical Framework

This section provides the theories that support the different variables related to the
Unfocused Mind of Grade 10 Students in Iligan Medical Center College- Basic Education
(IMCC-BED) due to social media.

According to the Staff Writers (2013), being so connected to social media all the
times comes with serious drawback. It can shorten attention spans, become addictive,
lead to less diverse social groups, and even, among student users, cause a marked drop
in academic performance.

A study at the Miriam Hospital's Center for Behavioral and Preventative Medicine
found that student engagement with digital media of any kind, whether it be posting to
Facebook or sending a text to a friend, could have a big impact on grades, lowering GPAs
and negatively impacting other areas of academic performance. With the freshmen
women in the study spending nearly 12 hours a day (yes, more than half their waking
hours) engaged in some form of media use, this may not be especially surprising, but it
is troubling. Because these students spend so much time engaging with media, they
spend less time doing homework, attending class, and even taking care of themselves by
getting enough sleep (Staff Writer, 2013).

"Students today have begun to rely on the accessibility of information that is

available on the social media platforms specifically as well as the web in general in
order, to get answers. This means that there is a reduced focus on learning as well as
on retaining information." (Armstrong, 2015).

A research study at University of Lagos showed that a great number of students

in University of Lagos, are addicted to social media. To this end, the researcher
3

recommended that social media should be used for educational purposes as well;
Social Networking Sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to
enhance academic activities and avoid setbacks in the students’ academic
performance; and Students should be monitored by teachers and parents on how they
use these sites This is to create a balance between social media and academic
activities of students to avoid setbacks in the academic performance of the students.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework below presents how this study’s independent variables
(Factors that affect the concentration of students and the effect of social media),
dependent variable( academic performance) and moderating variables ( age, attitude
towards social media and social media accounts) interplay with each other.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to evaluate the Unfocused Mind of the Grade 10 Student in IMCC-
BED due to social media.

Specifically, this study seek to answers the following questions.

1. What is the respondent’s profile in terms of:

1.1 Age
1.2 Attitude towards Social Media
1.3 Social Media Accounts
2. Is there a significant relationship between the academic performance of the
students and their addiction to social media?
3. Is there any way that social media may not be a variable that’ll make the students
be unfocused?
4.

Scope and Limitations

This study will be conducted to the Grade 10 students of Iligan Medical Center
College – Basic Education Department (IMCC-BED) to determine the unfocused mind
of students due to social media. The respondent are the Grade 10 students in IMCC-
BED. The participant are the ones who uses social media for at least (3 hours or more).

Data was gathered through (one on one interviews with respondent on every break time
and after class hours. The study was conducted from November to march).

This concept includes the factors, reasons, variables, advantages and

disadvantages impact of student’s role. In this study, the researchers view is that, by
focusing the different factors that influence student performance, it would be helpful to the
students to improve their managing profile.

Chapter 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Review of Related Literature

Social Media can be considered as a website or an application that’ll let its user
engage via smartphone, web application and many more. It is a computer-based
technology that facilitates sharing of ideas, information and other content like photos and
videos (Investopedia, 2018). It is a tool that people use to connect, interact and keep in
touch with family, friend or anyone all around the world. The word “social” means
interaction of other people by sharing information, and the word “media” refers to the
instrument or medium of communication such as radio, televisions etc. (Nations, 2018).
Social media can be form of variety of activities like photo sharing, video blogging, social
gaming, and networking. In fact, there are 67 million social media users or 63% of the
population active social media users in the Philippines (Newsbytes Philippine, 2018). The
average of 3 hours and 57 minutes a day are spent of Filipinos in social media sites mainly
in Facebook (Camus, 2018).

Social Networks can help students build a portfolio for their career, the platforms
can be used to start sharing work while a student is still in the learning space. By reflecting
on educational background and gaining exposure on social media builds social credibility
and students come across as people who can offer their expertise in specific field (Baker.
J., 2013). Social media enhance communication and interaction among students and
teachers. It has also been found out that social media are an effective way to promote
students engagement as it enables shy, intimidated or bored students share ideas and to
express their opinions in a more comfortable way, in addition educational advantage of
social media is that they foster collaboration of students and teacher where they bring
their ideas together, it is also capable of enriching the learning experience (Faizi, R., El
Afia, A., Chiheb, R., 2013).

Social media and internet itself contribute many benefits and opportunities that can
help people empower, know their selves, support, connections and many more. Social
media provides communication, support and safety information during crisis or disaster
(Rupert. S., 2013). Social media is the best way to communicate across vast distance, a
8

more convenient and easier way to connect with families, friends across the globe without
wasting money on plane tickets. Social media is also a way to show or convey feeling
and individual’s personality depending the way they post and search (BBC, 2013). It
provides real-time news and information discovery by just accessing news sites in the
internet more conveying that waiting newspaper at doorstep (Moreau.E.,2018). Its open
great opportunities for business owners and entrepreneurs to connect with customer, to
sell their product.

We are seeing education institutions adapting these kinds of development and

innovation, relying on group of resources and mechanism to improve student life. The use
of social specifically in education provides student ability to get more useful information
that makes education itself convenient in every way (Dlamini, K., n.d). Students are
experiencing the world through more than the use of books; they are learning and
adapting new forms of communication and the world of technology (Baker. J., 2013).

According to Richter, Social Media and Anxiety In 2018, the Centers for
Disease Control issued some sobering statistics about student anxiety and depression.
Teens are more lonely, anxious and depressed than ever. About a third of teens surveyed
by the CDC said they’d felt persistent sadness or hopelessness. Social media, says John
Richter, director of Public Policy at the Mental Health Association, believes social media
is exacerbating this trend. “Researchers are finding that when someone develops
depression and withdraws from peers, they see other people on social media smiling and
at parties with friends. It magnifies their sense of isolation”.

According to clinical psychologist Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair, the time teens are
spending on texting and online communication means they are missing out on developing
critical social skills. By communicating mostly through a media site, they are not learning
how to read body language, facial expressions, or vocal inflections. They may not even
be able to formulate a response in real time when interacting with people.

Students spend more time on social media than they do using personnel email.
Even Though, there is loss of privacy and safety, social media provides opportunities for
connecting with friends, classmates, and people with shared interest. Today, the main
aim of the student should be education and their future career. However, many students
9

rely on the accessibility of information on social media. That means reduced focus on
learning and retaining information. The study also points out the popularity of social
networking sites among students community. The social networking sites and social
media have revolutionized the world, bringing us closer than ever before. However,
students can exploit this and use it for a better life, a better tomorrow. It should be used
to connect, stay in touch, share views but not waste time on (n.a.,2013).

Today’s world is a global village. Everyone is connected to one another in this

vast network generated by the Internet. As said by Marshall McLuhan, a philosopher of
communication theory, “The new electronic independence re-creates the world in the
image of a global village.” This electronic independence is inherently dependent upon
the Internet. It illuminates the lives of thousands of people by spreading knowledge
internationally, thereby making us global citizens. ( Abhishek Karadkar,, 2015).

Students who spend more time using smartphones and other electronic devices
are less satisfied with their lives than students who frequently engage in face-to-face
interaction. “We found that teens who spent five or more hours a day online were 71
percent more likely than those who spent less than an hour a day to have at least one
suicide risk factor (depression, thinking about suicide, making a suicide plan or
attempting suicide). Overall, suicide risk factors rose significantly after two or more
hours a day of time online,” (Twenge, 2017).
