THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter includes a comprehensive review of related literature, related studies, conceptual

framework and definition of variables deemed relevant to this study. This concept, ideas, and

principles cited give credence to the fact that Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) can be utilized

for generating electricity necessary for highly developed technology.

Related Literature

The following literature that present the basis regarding the ability of Tomatoes (Solanum

lycopersicum) in generating electricity for highly developed technology.

Tomato is the edible, often red, berry of the plant Solanum lycopersicum, commonly

known as a tomato plant. Damaged tomatoes that are unsuitable for sale at the grocery store

found to be "a particularly powerful source of energy" as mentioned by US researchers (2016),

the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), is a very versatile fruit, flowering plant of the nightshade

family (Solanaceae). It can be juiced, made into cold soup, used as sauce or just eaten raw in a

salad. It is a true food icon and now its usefulness could be expanding to an unexpected area as a

US team is experimenting with the fruit as a source of electricity.

We used electricity in almost everything, when it comes to our gadgets, appliances and

vehicles. Electricity powers our world and our bodies. It is part of the nature, naturally occur in

different phenomenon and can be found in any forms and it can be used in either renewable or

nonrenewable according to Spark Fun (2013), it is describe as flow of electric charge. Electricity

is the flow of electrical power or charge. Electricity is both a basic part of nature and one of the

most widely used forms of energy.

 Technology makes everything in this world easier and possible. It’s being developed

throughout time and it keeps on changing. Stated by Ramey (2013), technology comes in

different ways depending on the needs of people since the advancement of technology has

created a new economic environment. Technology advances show people a more efficient way to

do things, and these processes get results. It also contributes on a positive level to the economy

as a whole since it results in cost savings for business owners, allowing them to invest in growth

in other areas of the business.

Since the technology has been developed nowadays researchers discovered a way to

collect electron that was excreted by the plant during the breakdown process. By the use of

electrode the electrons can be collected into electricity. Indicated on the study of Schrama

(2015), the process can be accomplished without harming the plants development. One good

thing about this project is that it costs effectively compared to commercial way on generating

electricity such as burning of coal and fossil fuels.

It is important to find another way on generating electricity. At the present time it is

commonly known as alternative energy sources. Asserted by the website the Science Clarified

(2014), there are different sources such as nuclear power, solar power, wind power, water power,

and geothermal power, among others. By this study, it will study, it will become an additional to

these alternative sources and it will create an opportunity to generate new knowledge for further

discovery and exploration by the research and experts.

Related Studies

The idea of using fruit for conducting electricity is widely known. Commonly, Lemon or

scientifically known as Citrus x limon is used for this type of experiment. It acts as the batteries

for the electric power to work. According to Explorable (2011), the study become efficient since

Lemon (Citrus x limon) is a citrus fruit which contains acidic content. The fruit have positively

charged ions which enable the electricity to be generated on the setup prepared by the researcher.

The assessment of defective Tomato’s ability in conducting electricity is comparable to this

experiment since the researchers are discovering a way on generating electricity through the

utilization of plants and fruits.

Definition of Terms

1. Alternative Energy Sources- This is a method of finding substitute source of electricity.

On this case, the researcher will use a plant to generate substitute source of electricity.

2. Assessment- It is a process of obtaining information regarding the study. The evaluation

of the ability of Defective Tomatoes in generating electricity is tested properly to seek its

potential help for future purposes.

3. Defective- It is a state of a plant being tested in the experiment on generating electricity

with plants.

4. Electricity- It is use to power the world daily. Researchers and scientist are trying to find

if there is a presence of electricity in various types of plants.

5. Technology- It is the continuous development of discoveries that makes our lives easy

and efficient and will help on the innovation of plant that can generate electricity.

6. Tomatoes- It is the berry of Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant.
