Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: estoy aqui

Jack Mc Martin: Good morning!

Marike van der Watt: Hello from Ukraine! I can hear you :-)

Lin Li: Good morning, everyone!

Lin Li: I received the e-mail.

Jack Mc Martin: Time to grab some coffee :)

Lin Li: yes.

Fruzsina Kovacs: Good

carmen valero garces: hi. Morning!

carmen valero garces: I assume you can´t hear me.. What

time does the plenary start?

Oana Gheorghiu: Good morning!

Congreso Virtual Internacional: 9.35

Congreso Virtual Internacional: plenary session

carmen valero garces: I´d like to check when my presentation

is . could you please let me know? thanks

Congreso Virtual Internacional: Of course, you can do it just

after the first break. I will send an e-mail to you

Oana Gheorghiu: Due to unforeseen circumstances, I won't

be able to log in tomorrow, when my presentation is
scheduled, I will send you my presentation in mp4 later
today, if that's all right.

Congreso Virtual Internacional: Yes, please, Oana

Congreso Virtual Internacional: as soon as possible so we can

check there is no problem with your file

Oana Gheorghiu: after the keynote, I start recording it

Oana Gheorghiu: then I send it to you

Congreso Virtual Internacional: Many thanks

Oana Gheorghiu: Many thanks from me too, and sorry for the
inconvenience

Congreso Virtual Internacional: No problem, academic life is

complicated

carmen valero garces: Yes, thank you so much. Really, food

for discussion. It´s a pity I couln´t see the ppt clearly.So
could you send us some bibliographic referecenes at least?

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: sure

Hamideh Nemati Lafmejani: Thank you very much. If we have

pre-discipline, discipline, interdiscipline and post-discipline
where can we put interdiscipline? Is it the same as
interdiscipline?

Hamideh Nemati Lafmejani: sorry that was a typo problem

Jinquan Yu: i want to ask what's the difference between

transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies in translation
studies?

Hamideh Nemati Lafmejani: yeah mine was the same is

transdiscipline the same notion as interdiscipline?

Jinquan Yu: is the sociology of translation a transdisciplinary

or a interdisciplinary study?
elke brems: I am online

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: Hello Elke, you can switch

your microphone on

elke brems: I'm afriad there's no microphone on my

desktop...

elke brems: But if there are any questions I can answer them
here via chat maybe?

Jack Mc Martin: Thank you for a very inspiring keynote

yesterday, Elke! A lucid bridge from Memory Studies to
Translation Studies and two wonderful case studies. A
question on the first case: Has Twain’s King Leopold's
Soliloquy been translated into French or any of Congo’s
indigenous languages (or any other languages)? If so, have
these ‘done any running’ (to use Astrid Erll’s expression) in
their respective literary fields?

elke brems: Good question. It has been translated in French,

but even after 1961, so it didn't circulate in francophone
Belgium before either

elke brems: And it hasn't been translated into indigenous

languages

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: Elke you can switch on your

microphone by clicking on the icon which can be found at the
top, next to the sign "audio"

Jack Mc Martin: Thanks, Elke.

Jack Mc Martin: It sounds like Elke doesn't have a microphone

on her machine.

elke brems: It says 'No se ha detectado ningun microfono' ;-)

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: are you using Google

Chrome or MOzilla Firefox?

elke brems: Yes

elke brems: Yes

elke brems: I don't think so. The cultural memory of the

Congo in both communities runs parallel. With regards to the
Great war it differs a lot though

elke brems: The Great War is an iconic event in the Flemish

nationalist movement. The myth says that many Flemish
soldiers died because they couldn't understand the orders
given to them in French by the Francophone army leadership.

elke brems: So for the Flemish cultural memory this war has
created a huge anti-Belgian sentiment
Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: this is very interesting

elke brems: But not so for the francophone Belgians of course

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: how come? Maybe the

francophone Belgians could not understand the orders given
by the Flemish soldiers either

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: why has this narrative been

used only by the FLemish? Could it be because Flanders has
become richer over the years and it uses this as a separatist
excuse ?

elke brems: The army leadership was francophone, the

'common' sodliers were Flemish, they gave no orders

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: ahhh I see

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: this is so fascinating

elke brems: long story though... we can talk about it in length

some other time

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: ehheehheeheheh I thought

as much
Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: thank you

Arzu Eker Roditakis: Can I ask a question to Elke as well?

carmen valero garces: I can´t see or hear anything - is the

conference going on? I´m interested in room 3. how can I go
there ?

Congreso Virtual Internacional: connect.uco.es/trans3

elke brems: Anyone can ask me a question...

Arzu Eker Roditakis: Thank you for the talk yesterday.

Memory and translation studies have indeed a lot in
common.

Congreso Virtual Internacional: Carmen, can you enter on

room 3?

Arzu Eker Roditakis: And I am interested in the intersection

between literary translation and memory. If literature can be
conssidered the memory of a nation or a culture

Arzu Eker Roditakis: can all literary translation be studied as

translation of memory? where do we draw the line?

Arzu Eker Roditakis: Can we?

elke brems: It depends whether a text functions as part of the
cultural memory or not

elke brems: Many texts play no role at all in a community's

cultural memory

Arzu Eker Roditakis: in the source culture you mean?

elke brems: No, in the target culture

elke brems: It can play very different roles in source and

target culture, that is a very interesting topic in itself

Marike van der Watt: Elke, I was still busy with the conference
in Lviv yesterday, so I missed your presentation. It seems like
something interesting for me as well if we look at texts about
the Anglo Boer War in South Africa and the literature from
that and which were also translated.

Arzu Eker Roditakis: Do we have clear guidelines to

determine which texts are parts of cultural memory?

Sherine Samy: Morning, has Prof. Bachir's presentation

started? I'm not receiving either sound or image on my
computer

Arzu Eker Roditakis: Or are we relying on the common sense

of the researcher here in a way?
elke brems: @Arzu, no, there are no guidelines, that is part of
our interpretive work as researchers

Arzu Eker Roditakis: Thank you

Arzu Eker Roditakis: Elke :)

elke brems: You're welcome

elke brems: Thank you!

Jack Mc Martin: Roger that!

Ester Torres: Luisa, could we use this break to do a test sound

for later?

Ester Torres: Te oigo pero nada

Ester Torres: he conectado mi micro

Ester Torres: está en verde

Ester Torres: Yo te oigo perfecta

Ester Torres: también está en verde

Ester Torres: pero no me oyes

Ester Torres: Voy a probar si al menos la camara

Ester2: me pide un plugin

Ester2: voy

Ester Torres: Hola, Vuelvo a etar aquí.

Congreso Virtual Internacional: Sorryu, Ester we have to start

with the next participant

Ester Torres: No problem!

Ester Torres 2: .

Congreso Virtual Internacional: Ester, are you going to do

your presentation with the video or on are go going to
activate your webcam?

Congreso Virtual Internacional: no

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: no

Ester Torres 2: I think I can activate webcam and microphone

Arzu Eker Roditakis: yes there is an error,

Ester Torres 2: I have tested in with "Reunion\Asistente para

configuracion" and it seemed to work

Congreso Virtual Internacional: ok

Congreso Virtual Internacional: maybe i can make a photo of

your picture

Congreso Virtual Internacional: ok

Congreso Virtual Internacional: I make a picture

Ester Torres 2: Wow! I will be commening on many things we

have in common - if I get my micro to work. ;)

Fruzsina Kovacs: Do pichers consider anniversaries, films,

other events?

Arzu Eker Roditakis: A question to Mark: is there any effort in

the pitch sheets to distinguish Flemish literrature from
Dutch?

Fruzsina Kovacs: Thank you for your talk!!

Fruzsina Kovacs: yes,thanks

Jinquan Yu: Thank you for your interesting presentation. How

and where did you collect this data?

Jack Mc Martin: flandersliterature.be

Jinquan Yu: Do you think the linguistic captial of the original

text is also a factor for its translation?

Jinquan Yu: yes

Arzu Eker Roditakis: a follow up on that: is there any effort in

the pitch sheets to distinguish Flemish literrature from
Dutch?

Arzu Eker Roditakis: sorry i got your name wrong the first
time

Jinquan Yu: thank you

Arzu Eker Roditakis: very interesting

Jinquan Yu: so the minority of flemish is almost invisible in the
promotion ?

Jinquan Yu: ok, thanks

Fruzsina Kovacs: Are the sheets changing - number: more are

added some are withdrawn?

Jack Mc Martin: Fruzsi, sheets are always being added but not
being withdrawn. They just progress down the list.

Ester Torres 2: Can you make a presenter?

Fruzsina Kovacs: TX

elke brems: Very interesting!

Jack Mc Martin: It sounds like Japanese literature helped

Korean literature in the same way Dutch literature helped
Flemish literature - are there examples of actual cooperation
between agents in Japanese and Korean production contexts?

Jack Mc Martin: (Thank you for your presentation!)

Jack Mc Martin: Thank you

Jack Mc Martin: You can always just email me as well

Jack Mc Martin: jack.mcmartin@kuleuven.be

Ester Torres 2: Got it"

Jinquan Yu: i may also contact you, jack

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: ester thank you for your

inspiring presentation

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: we'll keep in touch. This is

Paola Gentile

Jack Mc Martin: Please do, Jinquan

Jinquan Yu: thanks.

Jinquan Yu: no voice?

Jinquan Yu: yes

Subhas Yadav: yes

Arzu Eker Roditakis: yes

Arzu Eker Roditakis: my mic is on

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: paola.gentile@kuleuven.be

Jack Mc Martin: Yes

Janine Pimentel: yes

Jinquan Yu: yes

Jinquan Yu: do you consider review as a form of paratexxts?

transieco 1: yes

Jinquan Yu: and study it in the framework of paratext studies

in translation studies?

Arzu Eker Roditakis: my mic is off for some reason

Jinquan Yu: thanks

Jack Mc Martin: Thank you, Arzu. Did you also analyse how
the Nobel committee ‘reviewed’ Pamuk? How does the
committee’s jury report square with the reception in the NYT,
for example? Did the Nobel committee traffic in a similar
‘clash of civilisations’ mode when praising Pamuk's oeuvre?

Jinquan Yu: I wonder how to study the perceived

representation or image of Turkey in Angophone countries?

Jack Mc Martin: No, just curious

Jack Mc Martin: Very interesting

Jack Mc Martin: I think Arzu's mic is still on?

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: I think it is Azahara's mic

Arzu Eker Roditakis: Jinquan, i just saw your question

Arzu Eker Roditakis: you can contact me at

arzu.eker@gmail.com

Subhas: No hay nadie?

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: thanks

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: are there any questions we

can forward to Claudia?

Congreso Virtual Internacional 2: Rafael can we go on with

the rest of the programme?

Samira Spolidorio: This topic is very insteresting, people have

many criticism of translation of film titles in Brazil as well...
however, in here, translations have almost nothing to do with
it (they just get the bad rep!)

Samira Spolidorio: i can

Samira Spolidorio: yes, I can
