Ideation and Innovation

Prepared by: Anjith Augustine & Christopher

Date of Preparation : 24 July 2015
Distribution: All faculties
Revision: 1

Aim: To develop KMEACOA into a centre for innovation which will be a forerunner in innovation
and technology both in theory & practice and the propagator of a carefully crafted ‘school of thought’
relevant to the modern times pertaining to our culture and context.

Implementation methodology: The implementation should happen in three levels.

First and foremost as a college of architecture we should be exposed to new age technologies, ideas,
theories, methodologies, and innovations in the field of architecture internationally. For this we can
introduce a series of discussions or ‘Idea talks’ were students as well as faculties can introduce and
present any new idea, concept or technology they came across. This can be quick discussions in PPT
or verbal format with some printed graphics. Pecha Kucha format will be ideal.

Second stage will be to expose ourselves to theoreticians, academicians & practioners who have
chosen a different path and have succeeded at an international level. Also as a college of education
we are responsible in spreading it among the fraternity we associate with. This will require college to
find the right persons of the above said nature and bringing them to college for the ‘Big Idea Talk
Series (BITS)’. This will give the college a good mileage as an innovation centre.

Third stage will be the development of an Innovation Centre or R&D Centre at KMEACOA
constituted by students and headed by faculties. It should practically be a testing lab for student’s
ideas. This centre will slowly grow with the kind of exposure from the first two stages, with their own
research and academic exercises. They should be able to work on path breaking innovations, concepts
and ideas in the field of architecture relevant to our culture and context. Competition projects of
similar nature can be done under the centre. These innovations can be tested practically at our centre
with the help of college fund, Govt aid, IIA or any other interested organizations depending on the
nature of project. The completed projects will give the college a good mileage as an innovation centre.

Resources: The resource for Idea talks will be students themselves supported by faculty.
The second second stage can be clubbed with the lecture series being conducted at college or as an
extension of the same. Associations with practicing architects will help to find the right personals for
these talks.
The Innovation centre should be constituted in college with two faculty representatives & two student
representatives of SSA. Any student with interesting ideas can take support of the centre in further
developing it. Support from local IIA Chapter will be essential. Proper structure should be formulated
for the project funding mechanisms, research aids etc.

Time schedule:
The ‘Idea Talk Series’ – One week, one evening, one talk
First ‘Big Idea talk Series’- in 2 months (First to be conducted by September). To be conducted in
every 2 months.
The constitution of innovation centre - 3 months.
