Conic Sections : Parabolas, Circles, Ellipses, and Hyperbolas form a group of curves known as conic sections,
because they are the results of intersecting a cone with a plane
A B C
Circle : when the plane is horizontal (figure A).
Ellipse : when the (tilted) plane intersects only one cone to form a bounded curve (figure A).
Parabola : when the plane intersects only one cone to form an unbounded curve (figure B).
Hyperbola : when the plane (not necessarily vertical) intersects both cones to form two unbounded curves (each
called branch of hyperbola)
Degenerate Conics : a point, one line, and two lines.
Standard Equation of Circle : (𝑥 − ℎ)2 + (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 𝑟 2
General Equation : 𝐴𝑥 2 + 𝐵𝑦 2 + 𝐶𝑥 + 𝐷𝑦 + 𝐸 = 0 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝐴 ≠ 𝐵
Exercise A : In each item, give the standard equation of the circle satisfying the given conditions.
1. Center at the origin, radius 4
Exercise D : Given the graph of the following find the standard and general equation of the circle.
