Project Description
New 750 bed, 8 0 000m² tertiary hospital for the Kakamega County teaching and referral hospital comprising
of the following departments;
1. Outpatient department, all major specialist disciplines, 49 examination/consulting
rooms and 33 treatment rooms.
2. Trauma department including a C.T.-scanner.
3. Operating Department – 13 theatres including heart catherization/angiography.
4. Intensive care unit – 38 beds including two infectious isolation rooms.
5. Radiology with 15 diagnostic rooms including C.T.-scan and M.R.I.
6. Nuclear Medicine – 2 Gamma cameras, PET scan and PET MRI.
7. Oncology,
1. Radiotherapy – two linear accelerator, bunkers, brachy therapy and C.T.-
scanner.
2. Medical Oncology – 12 treatment beds and dedicated pharmacy.
8. Martenity unit with 4 no. theatres.
9. Delivery unit : 4 delivery rooms.
10. Neonatal Department – 10 beds ICU and 30 beds high care ward.
11. Wards : 4 surgical-, 4 medical-, 3 paediatric-, obstetrics and gynaecology wards.
12. Occupational therapy, physiotherapy and audiology.
13. Haemodialysis – 14 bed treatment.

15. Hospital dispensary and bulk store.

 16. Administration, including auditorium.
17. Support services including; CSSD, Bio-engineering, medical equipment processing,
central stores, kitchen, linen/laundry, mortuary, workshops and plant areas.

19. Great care was taken to attain LEED compliance, using double glazing, insulated walls,
low
20.energy HVAC-systems, solar panels for hot water and steam production, rain water
storage
21. For chillers and landscaping, recycling and safe medical waste disposal.

The Hospital building is a Multi-storey Structure having a gross floor area of

approximately 80,000m2 housing 75
50 beds, 13 operation theatres and various
hospital departments, wards, laboratories and support functions.

The Electrical engineering services have been designed to comply with the
recommended standards and statutory regulations. The systems included in the
electrical services installation and reticulation works for the academic hospital
include but not limited to are, HV Utility power intake, Uninterrupted power
supply systems, LV distribution, Electrical Cableways, Earthing and Lightning
protection system, Interior and Exterior lighting, Small power distribution &
power supplies to HVAC equipment, Fire Alarm system which includes Voice
Evacuation & Public Address systems, Audio Visual system, Security system
(CCTV and Access control), Specialist Hospital equipment (Operating Theatre
lighting, Surgical Luminaire pendants, Operating theatre, ICU and Procedure
service pendants, X-ray Viewing boxes, Examination lights, Operating Theatre
Technical Wall panels, Bedhead Trunking and Nurse Call systems).
