CORE BLOCK

• What part of the mould does the core block hold?

• What do you think determines the size of the core block?

• What type of material would you design your core block from?

CORE BLOCK FUNCTION

• What do you think is the primary function of the core block?

1. The core block holds the core insert.

2. The core block is the only place where the ejector box is attached.

3. The core block is the location were slide housing and hydraulic cylinders
are attached.

4. The core block is also critical for the alignment of the two halves of the
mould.

Designing a Core Block

• What points should you consider before designing a core block?

• Factors that would effect core block design:

1. The machine the mould being designed for.
2. The type of material the mould moulding.
3. The size of the part that the mould is moulding.

• What is the shut height of the mould?

• How can production requirements effect the design of a core block and
more specifically the mould?

• Designers should always look for and utilize universal mould bases.

Design of a Core Block

• What do you think should always be considered when

designing core block?

• What is the size of the insert that fits into the core block?

• How many guide pin bushing are required for this mould?

• Are there any slide that will be attached to the core block?

• How will the ejector box the attached to the core block?

Design of a Core Block cont’d

• What are the size and location of the ejector pins?

• Do the core half have a guided ejector?

• How is the ejector system lubricated?

• Do I have all the clearance hold designed into the core block?

• Does the core block require any form of heating?

• Can the core block be easily moved?

CAVITY BLOCK FUNCTION

• What do you think is the primary function of the

cavity block?

3. What is the size of the part that the mould is moulding?

• What is the shut height of the mould?

• How many parts is this mould expected to produce before it is

scheduled for service, or is this a one time production mould?

• Can we purchases a pre-machined mould cavity block?

• Does the cavity block require any for of heating and/or cooling?

• Can the cavity block be easily moved?

• Has the locator ring been accounted for?
