Self-Paced MOOC Badge
The owner of this badge successfully completed the
American English (AE) E-Teacher Program’s 2019 Content-
based Instruction self-paced massive open online course
(MOOC), developed by World Learning. The AE E-Teacher
Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State,
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs with funding
provided by the U.S. government. This MOOC is designed
to help participants meet the challenges of balancing the
teaching of both language and content in content-based
instruction (CBI) courses. Course objectives included the
following: 1. to become familiar with techniques to help
language teachers learn and teach content competently,
2. to know ways of analyzing and adjusting task difficulty
so as to make lessons that are an appropriate level for
students who are learning content taught in their second
language (L2), 3. to be able to formulate clear learning
objectives for CBI lessons and courses, 4. to be able to
plan CBI lessons that both help maximize students’
content learning and promote English language learning,
and 5. to be equipped to make in-the-moment decisions
about when and how to provide explicit language
instruction in CBI classes. Weekly topics included the
following: 1. CBI and Us, 2. The “C” in CBI, 3. Language
Instruction in CBI, 4. Multiple Factors, 5. Assessment.
