Johor .
1 April 2010

Dear Fairuz ,

How are you getting on in your new school? I’m sure you’re quite used to it by now. Thank
for your letter telling me all about your new school. I received it last week. I’m sorry i could not
replay to it immediately as I was busy preparing for my school, Annual Sport Day.

Let me tell you all about Sport Day which was held on 14 of April, last Friday. It was fine,
sunny day. But before the actual day, we were busy putting up tents for the participating athletes.
Each of the school sports house had put up one tent each. We decorated the tents gaily with flags and
balloons.

The quest of honour for the Sport day was Director of Education, En Amir Hussein. He came
at about 2 pm and stayed till the end.

My favourite event were the track and field event. My house, Hang Tuah , won the first prize
for the 200-metre relay and the 400-metre relay event. Everyone was cheering loudly for their teams
during the track event. I participated in the 400-metre race, and was the champion.

The prize-giving ceremony was held at 6 pm. All the students gathered in front of the grand
stand. My house, Hang Tuah emerged as the overall champion. We clapped and cheered loudly when
the house captain went to receive the championship trophy from the Director of Education. The
school principal then gave a closing speech to mark the end of the day. All of us were exhausted but
happy. We look forward to the next Sport Day.
I’ve got stop here for now. Do write to me and tell me more about the activities in your school. Till I
hear from you again, take care and goodbye.

Your friend,
Nik Mohamad Zhafran

NARRATIVE WRITING
Every school celebrates its Sports Day and, to this all, the children very longingly look forward
to. My school the St. Andrews Sr. Secondary School also has its Sports Day every year sometime
in the month of November. The month of November is earmarked for the occasion, as, at this
time, the weather is congenial for a long span of games on the field. When this day is about to
come, there appears to be a lot of activity in the entire school premises as take lime. Avocado so
there is a lot of overtime beyond the scheduled hours of routine work.

Weeks before the Sports Day, children start giving their names for different events, and then,
after the school hours, practices start. The children, who do not participate in any events, get
other duties of the like of making relevant charts, making lists of games and participants. It is
obvious that something is on for, at least for a fortnight before the event, studies are put as if on
the hold, except of course for the STDs X and XII. The rest of the school is seen bustling with
enjoyment and merriment for all enjoy such events.

All the children, all the teachers and even all the other non-teaching staff seems to busy with
some work or the other. This is because everyone - yes, everyone is assigned a duty to see that the
Day passes off well. After a fortnight of being over busy with the preparations for the Sports Day,
at last the day arrives. The lawns are so very meticulously done up, white chalk powder lines are
installed for different events. Victory stands are beautifully done up to make the victors feel
proud of being there after the events. All the children are so well groomed in their white uniforms
that, it is a sight to watch and admire. To cap it all, the staff members are also very smartly
dressed specially those involved with the different events - they blend so well with the smart
children that, the total effect is just smashing.

The day starts with the usual Assembly and then, all of us are instructed to go to our allotted
places on the lawn, class wise. There are volunteers from the senior children who guide the
smaller ones to their respective places and soon all is set as per the plan. As soon as all is settled,
the Chief Guest arrives, and the Principal goes out to receive him/ her. The Chief Guest is taken
to the dais and as soon as he/ she are settled, the Principal says a few words to introduce the
guest to all, and requests him to say a few words and declare the Sports open. Now, the guest
speaks usually on the importance of Sports and Sports Day, and declares the opening of the
function. As soon as these two important speeches are over, the Chief Guest declares the Sports
Day open, land there and then the events start.

One by one the events take place in a very well disciplined manner and the winners listed and
made to stand on the Victory Stand and cheered by one and all. The games and Sports last for
about two hours and then comes the most interesting moment of the function - the moment of
appreciating the winners by awarding them gifts and prizes, cups and shields. This is the ultimate
moment of pleasure for winners when, amidst loud clapping and shouting of cheers, they get
their rewards for their good work - from the Chief Guest. Even though I am not a very great
enthusiast of games or sports, I just love this day and look forward to it through the year. I also
make it a point to attend school on this day every year though I never participate. The thrill, the
excitement, and then, the pleasure of winning are all moments worth seeing and enjoying.

I love to see my friends and others participating with their hearts and souls with a complete
involvement in the games. Their victory boosts up even my morale. Every year, after seeing this
event, I decide that, I should also try to take part, but, the enthusiasm soon fades away as, I must
admit that, I am not too keen a lover or fan of sports and games. I do love to watch it all but; I
never feel the urge to participate.

DESCRIPTIVE WRITING
A SPORT’S DAY
School session is a formal education and had been founded for ages. Every single children
or teenagers deserve to get this precious chance and normally a person studies in his whole
life and there is no limit for us to study about everything. But in my lovely country Malaysia,
we have a rule which states that every child must go to school from the ages of seven years
old until seventeen years old in order to produce a lot of successors who will lead our
country in the future. Nowadays, so many students archive to obtain brilliant result and the
chance to be the best among the best becomes harder and harder. Even a genius student
finds it’s tough to get a great job or a place in any university if he is not good in sport.
The best alternative to solve this critical matter is by involving in co-curriculum activity such
as the sport’s day.

The sport’s day, which is an annual activity, has a lot of benefits even though most of the
students don’t enjoy it so much. My beloved school, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ghafar
Baba also never neglects this compulsory activity. I am pretty sure that everybody has an
experience in sport’s day. For me, I had experienced ten joyful sports day as I am sixteen
years old right now.

The best sport’s day I have ever had is absolutely my seventh/eighth/ ninth sport’s day
which was organized last year. On the 30th March , my excellent school had organized a
marvellous sport’s day. Now I still remember everything about the amazing day. A month
before the annual sport’s day, our school’s management had planned carefully any single
thing about our sport’s day. Puan Sahara, who is my favourite teacher, was the one behind
all of these things as she made a superb excellent preparation for sport’s day. She and the
other teachers had decorated and organized our sport’s day with flying colours.

During that day, we had to gather around at the huge school field. The scenery was so
incredible. I also lent my hands to the teachers to build many giants tents. Everything was
decorated with balloons, flags and colourful ribbons. Everybody felt so anxious like having
a butterfly in their stomach to see which team will win this sport’s day. I really hoped that
my team, which is Pendekar, will win.
The sport’s day started at seven o’clock in the morning with the marching parade of all
houses. This exciting event took an hour to be finished but I felt it just happened in a flash.
Sadly, I did not take part in this opening event. After that, Puan Hajah Nubah bt Aton, who is
my principal, gave her speech to the students and parents who were attending the sport’s
day. As usual, her speech was so long and full of information. Previously, my team,
Pendekar, won the marching event and I felt very happy as a king.

Then, the 100 metres race started before the 200 metres and 400 meters. In the100
meters, Ali who is my best friend also took part in this game representing his team, Satria.
The situation was as noisy as everybody cheered for their team. My team was expected to
win this event because we had Satria who is a state-level runner.
