Refrigerant-134a enters a 28 cm diameter pipe steadily at 200 kPa and 20 °C with a


velocity of 5 m/s. The refrigerant gains heat as it flows and leaves the pipe at 180 kPa and
40°C.
a) Determine the volume flow rate of the refrigerant at the inlet.

QUESTION 3 [20 MARKS]

A closed rigid container of 2.5 m3 contains a saturated liquid-vapor mixture of R-


134a at 15°C. The mixture is heated to 60°C until the substances becomes fully vapor.
a) Plot the P-v diagram for the above process.

b) Determine the total mass of the substance.

c) Calculate the quality of the substance at the initial state.

QUESTION 4 [20 MARKS]

A Carnot heat pump supplies heat to a heat exchanger. The heat pump operates with a
low-temperature reservoir at 15 T. Saturated liquid water enters the heat exchanger at
250 kPa and exit the heat exchanger as saturated water vapor. The liquid flows at steady
state at 75 kg/hour. The whole process is shown in Figure 1.

a) Sketch the T-v diagram for the fluid entering and leaving the heat exchanger.

b) Calculate the rate of heat transfer in kW, from the heat pump to heat exchanger.

c) Calculate the rate of work in kW that is supplied to the heat pump.
(4 Marks)
d) Calculate the rate of heat removed from the low-temperature reservoir.

QUESTION 5[20 MARKS]

For a particular power plant, the heat added and rejected both occur at constant
temperature and no other processes experience any heat transfer. The heat is added in
the amount of 3250 kJ at 440°C and rejected in the amount of 1750 kJ at 20°C.

a) Determine the net power produced in kJ, by this power plant.


(2 Marks)
b) Calculate the thermal efficiency in % of this power plant.
(2 Marks)
c) Analyse whether the process is reversible or irreversible by applying Clausius
inequality for this power plant.
(6 Marks)
d) Evaluate whether the Clausius inequality is satisfied or not by comparing the
cycle with the Camot heat engine. Justify your answer.
(4 Marks)
e) If the heat rejected from this power plant is reduced from 1750 kJ to 1336 kJ,
determine whether the process is reversible or irreversible.
(6 Marks)
