Studio Name: Understanding Development Plan provision of city amenities through large data analysis
for 4 classes of cities of Maharashtra with an aim to improvise the city DCR and MRTP ACT 1966.
No. of students groups: 4 (Total 18 = 4 groups of 4/5 students each)
No. of Cities: 4/8 cities of each class – Metropolis, A class, B class and C class
Period of Studio: 3 months (June 10th to September 10th)
Background:
Urban Planning best practice prescribes ideal city amenity standards of urban sector in a certain
ratio and proportion to the population density as per the City class norms. A city population keeps
growing and evolving through a dynamic process, however the amenity standards mentioned in the ACT
do not keep pace with this growth and poses a deterrent to contextualize with the city growth. Ideas of
vertical space usage and sharing of space have emerged in many cities which are more often inclined
towards rampant commercial development rather than building social amenities. Individual cities
through their Development Control Regulation have tried to find solutions to either match the gap or
provide only as much as possible in the given constraint by converting into a norm. What are the
standards as per the ACT, what are the limitations in the ACT, how have cities coped up through the
DCR, what is the effect on the quality of life of the citizens and what is the change that the ACT and DCR
needs to adapt to make it compatible to the city growth?
* City Selection – (to be discussed and finalized with a view that all aspects are to be covered and can
be visited by the students)
