ASSIGNMENT: CREATE YOUR OWN SOLUTION FOR THE CHAPTER REVIEW QUESTIONS
Instruction: First, log on Moodle—Chapter Review Questions. Use the solutions from the two
groups that your classmates and you contributed. Then, go through the questions and answers
from the solutions. Select the answer that is accurate, good, and appropriate for each of the
questions and copy it over here. When you copy the selected question and answer, you need to
include the question, the answer, as well as the name of student who did the question and
answer.

Scroll down to the end of this file to view the example.

In case none of the answers for a specific question is good or complete, you are asked to add the
details to make it complete in the Remark column.

Make sure to write your name and the section of OMIS 350 above. After you complete, then
submit this file on Moodle for credit.

1a) Describe how information systems have changed the way businesses
operate and their products and services.
Page 13-15
Information systems have changed the way businesses operate by
improving efficiency and productivity in their business practices. Businesses
have developed new business models to adapt to the new technological
platforms. Information systems have allowed Walmart to achieve increased
sales through the implementation of its Retail Link system, which digitally
links its suppliers to all Walmart stores. Apple Inc. used information systems
to transform the music business distribution model. Apple pushed an online,
legal distribution model based the technology platform of its products. High-
end hotels have used information systems to achieve customer intimacy by
keeping track of guests' preferences to customize room conditions according
to their digital profile. JCPenney uses information systems to enable supplier
intimacy. When a dress shirt is bought at the store the record of the sale
goes straight to its supplier. This allows JCPenney to keep very low
inventory costs. Information systems allow telecommunications companies
like Verizon access to real-time information on customer complaints,
network performance, and line outages. When firms effectively use
information systems they are operating at a competitive advantage. These
industry level changes make it necessary for companies to invest in
information systems in order to survive.

1c) Describe the characteristics of a digital firm.
Page 12
In the book, the authors tell us that "a digital firm is one in which nearly all of
the organization's significant business relationships with customers,
suppliers, and employees are digitally enabled and mediated. Some
companies are fully digital; where every aspect of their business uses the
internet.

1d Hannah Cardaronella
1d) Describe the challenges and opportunities of globalization in a
“flattened” world.
Page 11-12
An opportunity created from globalization is an increase in trading with other
countries. For example, technology companies in the US depend on parts
from outside countries, like Apple. It also creates jobs that fall under
"tradable services".
A problem from globalization for business students like us, is to produce
goods and services that can not be created for less expensive some where
else. We can do this by obtaining high level skills from furthering our
education.

1e) List and describe six reasons why information systems are so important
for business today.
pgs. 14-15
1. Operational excellence: Information systems are one of the most
important resources helping businesses achieve higher levels of efficiency.
2. New Products, Services, and Business Models: Information systems are a
major tool in helping firms to create brand new Products, Services, and
Business Models.
3. Customer and Supplier Intimacy: With the help of Information systems,
companies can now know their customers and suppliers on a new level.
This in turn makes the customers keep wanting to come back raising
revenue and the suppliers can now provide vital inputs
4. Improved decision making: Information systems provide managers with
real time data that helps them make better informed decisions.
5. Competitive Advantage: Having the best information systems in your field
provides you with a big competitive advantage over competitiors.
6. Survival: to some firms this is used as a way to just stay in the game and
not lose any more customers.

2a) Define an information system and describe the activities it performs.
page 16-17
An information system is defined "as a set interrelated components that
collect, process, store, and distribute information to support decision making
and control in an organization."
The three activities in an information system are input, processing, and
output. First, the information system collects raw data. Next, it processes, or
converts, raw data into a meaningful form. Finally, the output distributes the
information to the people that need to use it. Feedback helps evaluate and
correct the input stage.

2b Meghan Adams
2b) List and describe the organizational, management, and technology
dimensions of information systems.
pg 18-19
* The organizational dimension of information systems involves issues such
as the organizations hierarchy, functional speciaities, business processes,
culture, and political interest groups.
* The management dimension involves issues such as leadership, strategy,
and management behavior.
* The technology dimension consists of computer hardware, software, data
management technology, and networking/ telecommunications technology.

2c Donovan Lavigne
2c) Distinguish between data and information and between information
systems literacy and computer literacy.
pg 16-18
Data is streams of raw facts representing events occurring in organizations
or the environment before they have been organized and arranged into a
form that people can understand and use. Information is data that has been
shaped into a form that people can also understand.
Information systems literacy is an understanding of the management
and organizational dimensions of systems as well as the technical
dimensions of systems. Computer literacy focuses primarily on knowledge of
information technology.

2d Matthew Wright
2 D) Explain how the Internet and the World Wide Web are related to the
other technology components of information systems.
Page 21-22
The internet and the World Wide Web are related to the other technology
components of information systems by the information technology (IT)
infrastructure. The IT infrastructure provides the foundation, or platform, on
which the firm can build its specific information systems.

2e Drew Landry
2e) Define complementary assets and describe their relationship to
information technology.
Page 26
Complementary assets are those required to derive value from a primary
investment. Their relationship to information technology is that
complementary assets are the are the concept that make organizations and
managers more effective.

2f Christopher McKey
2f) Describe the complementary social and managerial, and orgazinational
assets required to optimize returns from information technology investments.
table 1.2
Organizational requires a mew business model as well as a deifferent
process to how things should go.
Managerial will require a stronger push on the technology by offering
training programs and incentives.

3a.) List and describe each discipline that contributes to a technical
approach to information systems

1. Management Science
1. emphasizes the development of models for decision-making
and management practices
2. Computer Science
1. Concerned with establishing theories of computability, methods
of computation, and methods of efficient data storage and
access
3. Operations Research
1. focuses on mathematical techniques for optimizing selected
parameters of organizations, such as transportation, inventory
control, and transaction costs

page 28-29

3b Michelle Poirrier
3b.) List and describe each discipline that contributes to a behavioral
approach to information systems.
Page 29.) The disciplines that contribute to the behavioral approach are as
follows, Psychology, Economics, and Sociology. Each having their own
benefit. Psychology study information systems with an interest in how
human decision makers perceive and use formal information. Economists
study information systems with an interest in understanding the production
of digital goods, the dynamics of digital markets and how new information
systems change the control and costs structures within. Sociologist study
information systems with an eye toward how groups and organizations
shape the development of systems and also how systems affect individuals,
groups, and organizations.

3c Brandon Smith
3c) Describe the sociotechnical perspective on information
systems.
Page 30
The view that by jointly optimizing both the social and technical
systems that are used in production, you can achieve optimal
organizational performance. This perspective helps to avoid a
purely technological approach to information systems.

1a) Describe how information systems have changed the way businesses
operate and their products and services.

Information systems have evolved through new, innovate business models

and advancements in technology. Smartphones are an example of this - an
increase in social media use on smartphones have become essential tools
of business because that is where customers are located. Internet sites are
also a business essential. The widespread adoption of the mobile
computing platform, the growing use of "big data," and the growth in "cloud
computing" where more business software runs over the internet are a few
ways in which information systems have affected business products and
services.
