Experimenting with pitch

The pitch of a musical note means how high or low it is. Musical
instruments need to be able to play notes of different pitches, so there
are different ways of making this happen.

Experiment 1
Get a thin elastic band and a thick elastic band. Cut them so that you have two pieces
of elastic that are the same length. Get somebody to hold the thick band at either end.
Pluck it and listen to the noise. Do the same with the thin band. What do you notice
about the pitch of each band? Write your results in here:

Thickness of band Pitch (high or low?)

Thick band
Thin band

Experiment 2
Now find two elastic bands of exactly the same thickness. Cut them up so that you have
one long piece of elastic and one short piece of elastic. Get somebody to hold the long
piece at either end. Pluck the elastic and listen to the sound it makes. Do the same with
the short piece.

Length of band Pitch (high or low?)

Long band
Short band

Experiment 3
Find an elastic band that is any size / thickness. Ask somebody to hold it at either end
and pull quite hard so that the band is very taut. Pluck it and listen to the sound it
makes. Now get the person holding it to hold it at either end so that the band is quite
loose. Pluck it and compare the sound to the previous one.

Tautness of band Pitch (high or low?)

Band held tautly
Band held loosely

Look at the results of your experiment.

What three things cause the pitch to get lower?

What three things cause the pitch to get higher?
