COLT ~ 1911 U.S. ARMY .45 AUTOMATIC

GENERAL EDWARD OLMSTED INSCRIBED
MFD 1913 W/ DOCUMENTATION & EXTRAS...C&R
NO RESERVE!! Here's a fascinating piece of military history! This is an early Colt 1911 pistol that was
manufactured in 1913 and issued new to Edward Olmsted (then a staff officer/ADC to Commanding
General), New York National Guard. Olmsted would carry this pistol during his service on the Mexican
Border during the Mexican revolution and again in Europe during World War One with the American
Expeditionary Force. Olmsted began his military career in 1898 as a Private in the New York National
Guard, Squadron A cavalry. He would work his way up through the ranks, eventually retiring as
Brigadier General in 1936. Olmsted's life story and military career is well documented by his great
nephew on this website: Uncle Ned Olmsted: An Armistice Day Tribute

Olmsted's love for the military, in particular Squadron A, was demonstrated in 1937 when he donated
this very pistol to be awarded as a trophy in the Officers Charger Class of the Squadron A Spring
Horse Show. The top of the slide was professionally engraved:
"SQUADRON A SPRING HORSE SHOW - 1937
OFFICERS CHARGERS
PRESENTED BY
EX-MEMBERS ASSOCIATION OF SQUADRON A
CARRIED IN ACTIVE SERVICE 1913-1919 BY
BRIG. GEN. EDWARD OLMSTED"

When he donated the pistol, Olmsted drafted a letter on American Hotels Corporation letterhead
detailing his intent and a bit of the pistol's history. The letter is dated 22 March 1937 and is signed by
Olmsted. Following the award, a handwritten note was added to the bottom of the letter which reads
"The pistol was won by J.K.B. riding Russelson, by Gordon Russell, who was trained by J.K.B.". The
identity of "J.K.B." is yet to be determined but could make for some interesting research.

This pistol remains in very good condition. The slide was refinished following the engraving and the
pistol has seen some use since that time (it is entirely possible that the new owner, "J.K.B.", ended up
carrying this pistol in World War Two). The finish on the frame is factory original. All of the
component parts, with the exception of the barrel, are correct for a pistol produced in late 1913. The
slide is correct for the receiver serial number with early patent date marking, round top rear sight,
etc. The hammer is the early "short" type, the safety has the early thin thumbpiece, the recoil spring
guide has the pointed legs, etc. The barrel is marked with the connected "HP" which indicates later
production (1918-1919) and was likely replaced at the time of presentation. Matching internal wear
patterns between barrel, slide, and frame indicate this is likely the barrel that has been with the
pistol since 1937. The blue finish rates about 85% overall. The front strap shows the most wear and
has faded to mostly silver. There is some holster wear to other parts of the pistol and a few scattered
dings and handling marks but no significant corrosion or any sign of pitting. The original diamond
checkered grips are in generally good condition although the right panel has a small sliver missing
from the bottom leading edge. This pistol is in excellent mechanical condition and has a very good
bore. It comes with an assortment of period extras including:

◦ One two-tone lanyard loop magazine in very good condition

◦ Four two-tone WWI plain base magazines in very good condition
◦ Two military "Eagle Snap" double magazine pouches in good condition (one is dated 1913)
◦ One military style commercial double magazine pouch that is stamped with the intials "J.K.B."
◦ One "Audley" right hand "safety holster" with tie down. The holster shows some wear but is marked
inside with the pistol number and "HDQRS (insignia) N.Y.DIV."

Also included is the aforementioned original presentation letter; a Colt factory letter showing the
pistol was shipped September 6, 1913; prints from the website detailing Olmsted's career; and prints
showing his military service record.

This is a special pistol that is steeped in military history and extremely well documented. A fantastic
piece for the military collector!!
