1. INTRODUCTION:-
1.1 The Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department is planning for the
strengthening of existing flexible pavement of Ahjoo Matroo road Km 0/0 to Km
2/0. For this purpose Assistant Engineer, B&R Sub Division No-Il, H.P.PWD
Joginder Nagar requested vide his letter No. PW-JNSD-II/CBR. Test/2019-20-493
dated 24.06.2019 has requested to M/S Geotech Engineers & Consultants, Maria
Niwas, Neer Sanjay Gandhi Public School, New Shimla for conducting the
Benkelman Beam deflection Test. The values thus observed experimently in the
field will be utilised working out the additional overlays required for strengthening
the existing pavement in the aforsaid reach of Ahjoo Matroo road.
After completion of preliminary arrangement at site, the necessary technical staff
from the laboratory was deputed to take the necessary observation from the site.
The deflection were recorded with Benkelman Beam at a distance of 0.60 mtr.
from the pavement edge at 10 points both in the left as well in the tight hand side
of the road.
2 REACH INVESTIGATED:-
The reach of this road under this study starts from Km. 0/0 and ends at
Km. 2/0. An annual rainfall is more than 1300 mm has been reported in the
vicinity of the road. The sub-soil water posses no problem in this section of the
road. However, surface soil water oozing from the adjacent hill side slopes during
rainy season has definite effect on the sub-grade of the soil.

3. IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF SOIL:-
The identification and classification of soil has been done as per instruction
contained in the code IS: 1498-1970.The gradation analysis and index properties of
soil held that the soil -strata was identified asithat of coarse grained soil of group
symbol CL. The group symbol OL represented clayey gravels, silty clay of low
plasticity.
4. FACTOR FOR TEMPERATURE AND SI
Correction for temperatiire i§ not applicable di
ONAL CORRECTION:-
> to the thin bituminous surfacing
because these are usually unaffected by changes in temperature
The soil strata was identified as coarse grained soil of group symbol CL and the
Plasticity index.of soil is found to be less than 15. The moisture content of soil
was found to be 4.0% and the annual rainfall is ‘more than 1300 mm, so a moisture
correction factor‘is to be applied 1.85.
5. BENKELMAN BEAM DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS:
Necessary deflection measurements. were recorded. at. representative. points in this
section with Benkelman Beam as per procedures laid down at clause 4.3 in
IRC: 81-1997.

6. TRAFFIC INTENSITY FOR DESIGN:-
The traffic intensity had been reported t
department. The traffic in the year of

letion is estimated using the standard

7. ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION OF TEST RESULTS:
The visual inspection conducted in the'field during investigation indicated that the
Pavement condition of the said —_ to 2/0 was found to be poor
to good. A review of the test ts contained in Annexure-I indicate that the
Values of characteristic deflection had been observed to vary from 1.736 mm to
deflection, hence the whole of
che average value of characteristics

1.950
‘Taking into consideration the average characteristics ieee 782mm
‘against traffic:intensity:3,90 msa the overlays thickness required.as per figure Siof
IRC 37-1997 had been worked out to be 97mm.
For strengthening purposes. the Overlays thickness of bituminous macadam
Le. 50 mm may be provided withibituminous concrete of 30 mm (the bituminous
concrete is obtained by converting the balance of 47 mm bituminous macadam by
using equivalency factor 0.7 for Bituminous concrete (BC)= 32.9 mm say 30 mm).
