Assistant Superintendent Shadowing Reflection

I was given the opportunity to shadow and work under the direction of Ohio County Schools
Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones. This experience allowed me to see how important effective
communication was throughout the district and when dealing with outside groups. I attended and
participated in a bond committee meeting regarding future construction at Wheeling Park High School.

A major part of my shadowing experience was working with the architectural firm that has
designed a new front entrance and office areas for Wheeling Park High School. At the meeting, we met
with stakeholders including students, parents, teachers, administrators, board members, and
community members. During this meeting, the architectural firm presented current outlines for the
next stage of renovations. They had previously unveiled another design that was not well received.
During this meeting, the architect discussed and showed layout images and presented possible ideas for
this renovation. Having input from stakeholders was essential. Many shared concerns and ideas to alter
the current plans to better meet safety needs, and the needs of students, teachers, and administrators.

During the meeting, I was able to provide personal feedback on the layout both from a teacher
perspective, parent perspective, and a future administrators perspective. The architect as well as Mr.
Jones and other administrators in attendance thanked me for pointing my concerns out. The draft that
was presented will go back to the design table and the input provided by the stakeholders will be taken
into consideration. I found it very interesting that many outsiders do not have a clue as to the daily
functions that occur within the walls of a school. Simple things such as the placement of staff mailboxes
could disrupt daily operations. The placement of the attendance secretaries versus the main office
secretaries and their job duties can be effected by the design. I was honored to take part in this meeting
and look forward to continuing to serve on this committee to enhance the education of our students in
Ohio County Schools.

It is evident Ohio County supports a strong collaborative culture. Communication with all
stakeholders was observed and I was able to understand the shared accountability throughout our
entire school system. Superintendent Dr. Miller and Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones understand the
importance and practice leadership from the middle. Their leadership has shown to be a key ingredient
for success in our continuous improvement efforts.
