Filipino Elderly Week

● The Filipino Elderly Week is held annually, every first week of October.
● It aims to show recognition to the fact that the senior citizens of today are active
contributors to the growth and development of the nation, and that many of them
continue to be productive members of their families, communities, and society.
● According to the Presidential Proclamation No. 470, issued on September 26, 1994,
the elderly is the fastest-growing sector of the population.
● The proclamation also states that they must be accorded decent living through the
provision of adequate food, shelter, clothing, and health care, and be provided with
opportunities for livelihood, family, community support, and self-help.
● They should be accorded access to appropriate educational and training programs,
whether as participants or as resource providers, considering their wealth of
experience and capabilities.
● The celebration of Elderly Filipino Week comes after the global celebration of
Grandparents Day.
● The DOH, in collaboration with the DSWD, PhilHealth, and other LGUs, senior citizen
associations, and shopping malls, usually offer free services and treats to the elderly
in appreciation of the important role they play in nation-building, and to heighten
public awareness and encourage participation in addressing issues and concerns
confronting the elderly.
