Course Outline (tentative)

• What is this course?, What to expect from this course?, Introduction,


Bridge Engineering, Roles and Responsibilities of a Bridge Engineer.

• Bridge components, types of bridges, importance of various types,


aesthetics, common bridge types in Pakistan, special bridges under-
construction in Pakistan.

• Site visits and Reccy survey, selection of bridge site, surveying, geotechnical
investigations, hydrological and hydraulic studies, traffic studies.

• Bridge specifications, factors considered in deciding bridge type, exposure


to AASHTO LRFD (American Association of State Highways and
Transportation Officials) Specifications and PCPHB (Pakistan Code of
Practice for Highway Bridges) 1967.

• Loads (Gravity loads, Lateral loads, forces due to deformation, collision


load), ASD and LRFD design philosophies.

• Limit States (Service Limit State, Strength Limit State, Fatigue & Fracture
Limit State, Extreme Event Limit State), geometric design considerations,

• Girder line analysis, Vehicle live load HL-93 (AASHTO) , PCPHB Live Load
Model, System Analysis for Gravity, Shrinkage & Temperature, Pre-stress
and Lateral Loads, Finite element modeling of bridge.

• Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) of Bridge Case Studies: Types of tests,


expertise required, equipment used in NDE of bridges, purpose of testing,
relevant code/standards

Assignment Submission Protocol
1. All assignments shall have Title Page (with name of student/course, fall/spring
year, assignment title and number etc.)
2. The assignments must be submitted within due date.
3. All the assignments shall be done individually (unless instructed otherwise).
4. The assignments must have Table of Contents
5. The body of assignment must have introduction, problem, statement,
methodology, solution/work, conclusions and recommendations.
6. All the figures and tables shall be provided as annexure with numbering.
7. Complete assignment shall be submitted in hard printed format with ring/staple
binding.
8. All the work must be converted to one PDF file with correct sequence and sent to
email above. All emails must contain name of student, fall/spring year, subject
must contain assignment number.
9. All the original work files like XLS (Excel files), DOC (Word files), JPG etc. (images
files), SDB (SAP200 files) and others should be also be sent to email stated above.

Project Submission Protocol
• The project submission protocol must follow all steps listed in “Assignment”
submission protocol with additional requirements as under:
– Project must contain proper references to information/facts stated in the project.
– Project must be submitted within due date.
– Projects shall be done in group of two students. The students should inform the instructor the
complete details of group (name of each students) via email before the next class.
– Each group has to present their work on the date/the class announced by the instructor.
– Q&A session will be held in which other groups & instructor will ask questions. Rating will be done
for Questions as well as for Answers.
– 15 mins. for presentation and 10 mins. for Q&A
– Dr. Akhtar Naeem will be invited to attend the session as Guest
– Presentation must be prepared in MS PowerPoint and sent to instructor a day earlier

• Discuss, Select and Start Work on Projects at appropriate time as soon as possible
