Hydraulic Power Tong Operation Manual
SLD SUMMARY, STRUCTURE CHARACTERISTICS AND WORKING PRINCIPLE
1 Summary

Model XYQ12A hydraulic power tong is a mouth opening power tong which can soon make-up or
break-out joints of pipe strings in well service. It is used in making-up or breaking-out tubing,
small drilling pipe and small casing, their diameter are from 27/8 ″-51/2 ″(73mm to 140mm). It
has follow advantages matching with the same kind of tongs, which is simple structure,
convenient operation, reliable performance, long life and large torque. It is widely used on shore
or off shore oilfields. It can reduce workload, enhance working efficiency and improve the well
service.

2 Structure Characteristics And Working Principle

Hydraulic power tong consists of two main parts--master tong and backup tong. The backup tong
clips coupling or joints, (It can also clips the pipe body by extending the front and back guide
arms as required.) and the master tong clips pipe string with turning in clockwise or
counter-clockwise, by this way, it completes making-up or breaking-out.
2.1 Transmission System
Hydraulic power tong has four shifts to reduce speed, as figure 1.
Low Gears: Z2, Z1, Z3, Z5, Z6, Z7, Z11, Z12, Z13
Second Low Gears: Z2, Z1, Z3, Z5, Z10, Z11, Z12, Z13

2.2 Tong Head Assembly (Fig.2, Fig.3, Fig.4)
2.2.1 Clamping Mechanism (Fig.2, Fig.3)
The clamping mechanism is double direction clipping by an inner curved roller for climbing. It
consists of ramp, roller, roller axle, jaw plate, die seats, tong dies and jaw plate frame assembly.
The jaw plate frame assembly is fixed in the inner of open gear. The spline on the board is
matched with another spline on connection plate of braking mechanism. When the transmission
system starts to drive the open gear turning, the jaw plate frame assembly doesn’t turn first at all
under the braking force from the braking mechanism, the curved ramp turns together with the
open gear, the roller on the jaw plate climbs along the curve surface of the ramp, it makes jaw
plate assembly towards the center, then it clips the pipe string at the first step. As the torque
extends and over the braking moment, the open gear drives all the ramp parts in the braking
mechanism turning together with the pipe string which are connection plate, braking disc, jaw
plate frame assembly and the jaw plate. The backup tong clamping mechanism is the same as the
master tong. Hydraulic oil pushes rack plunger reciprocating action and also drives the duplex
gear and the jaw plate frame turning inside the main body of the back tong, then drives the roller
climbing, finally clips or looses the pipe string.

2.2.2 Braking Mechanism (Fig.2)

Jaw plate must be forced to braking to drive roller and ramp moving in the opposite (i.e.
climbing slop and reset). The braking mechanism consists of braking disc, braking steel plate,
splint connection plate, upper and lower friction plates, adjusting screw, spring and lock nut. It can
change braking torque by adjusting the compress force from the spring.

2.2.3 Reset Mechanism (Fig.2)

It is the initial state of hydraulic power tong that the master tong jaw plate frame, the open gear
and the opening of the shell body align with the back-up tong jaw plate frame and the opening of
backup tong main body. After once making-up and breaking-out ends, the hand control valve
makes hydraulic power tong back to initial state, then the pipe string goes in or out through
hydraulic power tong easily. As making-up and breaking-out, the directions of the reset konb on
the master and backup tongs should be same.

The centralizing mechanism centralizes from up and down, inside and outside. It consists of roller
support frame, centralizing roller, centralizing roller axle and roller, which are installed on the
shell and the head cover of the tong. They match with the open gear and the groove on cover
of the open gear, so they are sure to drive the open gear turns along the original axle central line to
avoid deflection and axial running-out.

5.2 Adjusting Braking Torque
Loose lock nut (ZQ-67), wrench each screw evenly (ZQ-66), press braking spring (ZQ-32) and

turn 3600 counterclockwise, finally tighten the lock nut. (See Fig.26)

It is in direct proportion between braking torque and racing pressure. Braking torque is more big
and the racing pressure of hydraulic power tong more high.
The preliminary clamping from backup tong to the pipe string depends on racing pressure. Backup
tong cannot expose dies if racing pressure is too low.
Too big braking torque is not suitable, it is very good that master tong and backup tong can

expose dies properly. Don’t press the braking spring to the bottom.

5.3 Adjusting The Space Between Master Tong And Backup Tong

 Master tong clamps pipe string body, backup tong clamps the coupling (Both master tong and
backup tong clamp drilling pipe tool joints) by using common pole (Standard Disposition).
The method of adjusting the space between master tong and backup tong is to adjust the
screws on the front and back guide poles. (See Fig. 27)

 Adopt long guide pole (Requirement is needed in order.) when master tong and backup tong
clamp pipe body. The method of adjusting the space between master tong and backup tong is
to insert the pin to proper hole on the guide pole, and use cotter pin locking them.(See Fig.28

The space between the guide pole under the support base and the guide bucket mustn’t be smaller
than the biggest length for screw engagement.

5.4 Making-up Operation (This manual is suitable for making-up or breaking-out direction with
right hand thread, but the left hand thread is on the contrary.)
 Hydraulic power tong does racing, make it back to preliminary working state. Select proper
gear according to actual requirement.
 Put the reset knob of the master tong and backup tong to making-up direction, be sure the
direction is in the same with indicating sign. (Fig.29)
