Directed Writing – Speeches

A speech is a talk delivered in public. It can be during a formal or informal occasion. There are many types of speeches such as a
“Thank you” speech, a “welcome” speech or a farewell speech. There are also speeches on topics of interest or social issues.

Here is the format of a speech.

Introduction  Greet the audience

 Introduce yourself to your audience. Include details such as your name, position held,
club/department attached to, etc
 Introduce the topic
 State the purpose of your talk.
Body of Speeches  Include all the content points and elaborate on them
(in paragraph)
Conclusion  Conclude your speech and thank your audience,
 A speech must be written to be heard. So, you need to write in a way that keeps the attention of the audience.

The following are some useful guidelines to help you write your speech.

 Good morning (state your audience). I feel honoured to be able to give a
talk. I am a doctor from Sibu General Hospital and my name is ………
 Good morning, boys and girls. Before I begin my speech, let me introduce
myself, I am ………..
 Good morning (state your audience). First of all, before I begin my speech,
let me take opportunity to thank the school for inviting me to give a talk.
 My talk is entitled “How to stay fit”.
 Today I am going to talk on the topic. “How to prevent snatch theft”.
 Without wasting any more time, let me introduce the topic of my talk
which is “How to prepare for an exam”.
Involve the reader:
 Ladies and gentlemen, I am sure all of you are aware that…….

Ask Questions:
 Are you all aware that…..?
 Do all of you understand that…..?

 By using conjunctions
