Standard 4:

The coursework included analyzes language forms and structures. The EDU
526 Language worksheet touches on some of the most important basic units of
language. These are essential for EL students to understand but these concepts don’t
always come easily. Included with each of the basic units of language is a strategy for
EL to overcome obstacles that make these concepts difficult.

The integrated language arts approach is an excellent teaching strategy when


trying to improve students’ oral language development in each of the following
categories, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The included article address and
effective strategy that promotes English learners’ literacy and communicative
competence.

Standard 5:

I chose to include the EDU 527 IRIS Assignment. This assignment demonstrates
understanding of BICS and CALP which are the basic linguistic formations that students
use to conduct themselves in everyday situations among peers and within the
classroom where there are more formal and grammatically correct situations.

In addition to BICS and CALP I chose to include the stages of language


acquisition assignment. For each of the included stages (pre-production, early
production, speech emergent, beginning fluency, Intermediate fluency, and advanced
fluency) is an activity that promotes each of the following stages.

Standard 6:

The included thematic unit demonstrates understanding of various formative and


summative assessment strategies. Learning objectives were created for students
functioning at various levels of Blooms taxonomy. Through using the SDAIE lesson
planning strategy I was able to create a unit that was easily accessible by all students
and easily graded using the included rubric.

In addition to the thematic unit I chose to include the SDAIE instructional


planning sheet. When planning an SDAIE lesson special attention must be paid to the
various strategies needed to both support and assess English Learners. Included are
strategies that underline modifications that are added to strengthen instruction.
Standard 7:

Developing content instruction relies heavily on teachers understanding their


students. In my Classroom Application Paper it addresses the demographics of my
school site and how the students and the surrounding community impact how I develop
Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English. I strive to create meaningful
educational experiences for all students from all backgrounds.

The second article I included addresses the historical journey the US has taken
towards bilingual education. Events that have had a lasting impact on how we teach
English learners today include the case of Lau v. Nicholas. Although we have made
progress in ELL education there are still things that can be done to improve. These
ideas are also discussed in the included journal.
