Approach: Teaching Grammar through Texts

Past and Past Perfect Tenses

Materials: Laptop, LED TV/LCD Projector

Objectives: By the end of the session the students are expected to:
a. recognize the parts of an essay;
b. recognize the different uses of past tense;
c. use the past participle and past tense of verbs in
sentences correctly and meaningfully; and
d. appreciate the lesson as a means of realizing that the
youth is the hope of a nation.

Procedure: A. Preparation
 Present pictures of the actions of a modern teenager
and an ideal teenager.
 Let the students judge and explain which among the
two is a better image of a teenager.
B. Presentation
1. Reading/Discussion of Selection
 Relate the essay “What is Youth?”
 Provide a brief background on the essay and present
the saying: “youth is not wasted on the young”. Then,
let the class read it silently.
 Next, conduct an interactive discussion about the
theme and message of the essay.
 Put emphasis on answering the question: “How can
the youth be a manifestation of hope of our nation?”
 Afterwards, discuss the different parts of an essay.
2. Grammar Discussion
 Then, let the students find action verbs within the essay.
Also, recall the difference of regular and irregular
verbs.
 Review the class on tenses of the verbs using the words
extracted from the text, focus on past tense.
Clarify the difference of past participle and past form
of verbs.
 Then, discuss the uses and forms of the past tense:
a. Simple past tense in statements
b. Past emphatic form
c. Negative statements in the past tense
d. Asking questions in the past tense
e. Past progressive form
f. Past habitual action
g. Past passive
 Explain clearly when to add –d/-ed, when to use be
form+ main verb, and when to use the past participle
in forming the past tense of verbs.
C. Practice
 Let the students answer Exercise 4 on page 219 of the
textbook.
 Check the activity and process the answers.
D. Purposeful Closure
 End the lesson by letting the students give insights on
the saying “youth is not wasted on the young”.
 Let them pay attention on the meaning of the verb
used and draw out ideas on how the saying is true.
