WEEK 1 TO-DO LIST: Authentic Materials and Realia

This list is designed to help you plan your week. There will be a to-do list each week. On this list
you will see the required and optional activities for this week of the course. You may want to
print this out for easy reference. For your convenience, there is also a simplified checklist that
you can download:
https://d28rh4a8wq0iu5.cloudfront.net/shaping1landscape/week1/checklist_end_of_week1.pdf

We estimate that you will spend about 4-5 hours on the activities for this week. This includes
about an hour each for
● viewing videos, taking notes, and responding to the in-video questions
● reading at least one of the required articles and taking notes as needed
● reading and posting on the discussion forums
The remaining time would be spent on learning more about how Coursera works, completing
your profile, participating in the contest thread, doing the pre- and post-week knowledge checks,
and undertaking personal explorations of the optional readings and videos.

See the Suggested Week 1 Schedule below to help manage your time.

Information about Coursera, including help: https://courserahelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us

You can also find forums where you can share problems and get suggestions from your peers,
as well as contact the instructors about issues with the materials, by looking at the >All
Discussion Forums link on the left sidebar of any course page.

Optional: Please add information to your Coursera profile by clicking on your name in the top
right corner of the screen and selecting >Profile. If you are willing to share information with
others, pull down the Privacy menu and select >The Coursera community. You can add
whatever information you are willing to share. Please understand that everyone in our MOOC
and in other Coursera courses will be able to see the information.

Also, please introduce yourself in the Introductions Forum (linked in the left sidebar or within
the >All Discussion Forums list, also on the left sidebar). The Introductions Forum posts are
seen only by other people enrolled in our course. Your introduction will help others in our course
connect with you. (If you are receiving too much email, change your >Course Preferences in the
pull-down menu under your name.)

REQUIRED ACTIVITIES
Download and/or print any materials that you feel will be useful to you.

1. Video introduction
Start by watching the Introductory Video for Week 1. It gives you some information and food for
thought about the topics for this week:

2. Pre-viewing Knowledge Check

Take the Pre-viewing Knowledge Check for Week 1:

It will help you get a sense of what you already know, including essential vocabulary related to
this week’s topic

3. Using and Adapting Authentic Materials (Module 8) Video
Read the Video Viewing Guide for Week 1, which will help you think about the classrooms you
see: https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-004/wiki/week_1_video_viewing_guide
It is very helpful to download (and print, if possible) a copy of the Video Viewing Guide:

pdf

Then watch the video for this week:

https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-004/lecture/3?preview=1
Please watch the video on Coursera at the address above so that you can do the in-video
questions to check your knowledge. If you cannot view the video at the Coursera link, you can
watch it without any questions at YouTube: Shaping the Way We Teach English: Module 8,
Using & Adapting Authentic Materials:

You’ll see additional pre-viewing ideas as well as knowledge checks and reflection questions
during the video. The Video Viewing Guide will help you take notes in preparation for the
required Weekly Quiz at the end of the week.

4. Required Reading
You can download all of the required readings for this course as the
Course 1 Ebook at
https://d396qusza40orc.cloudfront.net/shaping1landscape/c1-ebook.zip
You can view the book and other PDF files in Acrobat Reader, or download them to a
tablet or smartphone and place them in “eReader” software such as Google Play on
Android, or iBooks on iPad, or the Adobe Reader app for either system.

Please choose one of the following articles, depending on which level/age of student you
teach. (Articles are linked from the assignment pages below.) You may read both articles and
participate in both Discussion Forums, but only one is required.

note-taking guide at

language classrooms. English Teaching Forum, 43 (4), 10-21.

Your notes on the reading and on the video will help you prepare for the required Weekly Quiz
at the end of the week.

5. Forum discussions (participation is graded)
Respond to the questions based on the video and your Required Reading assignment in ONE
of the required Discussion Forums for this week, either for Teachers of Children/Young
Learners or for Teachers of Teens/Adult Learners.
You will also find the Required Forums list in the >All Discussion Forums link in the left sidebar.

Note: You may participate in any forum (see the >All Discussion Forums link in the left
sidebar), but you will be graded only on the Required Discussion Forums. You will
need a minimum of two contributions (posts, new threads, or comments on others' posts)
in at least one Required Forum for each week. Each post/comment must be substantive,
related to the topic of the week, and unique. (Just saying "I agree" is not enough!)
If you share an idea that you found somewhere else, you MUST include the source of
the idea, such as the URL, or name of the book or article and author, pages, etc. Be
especially sure to include the source if you are copying and pasting from somewhere
else so that you avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is a violation of the Coursera Honor Code.
Be sure to read the Netiquette file before posting in any forum:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-004/wiki/Netiquette

6. Week 1 Quiz (GRADED)

Check what you understood of this week’s topic with the Weekly Quiz. This is a summative
assessment. Use your notes from the video and the readings. You can take this test twice, but
you lose 20% of the score when you take it more than once.

Take either the

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

1. Contest Forum
The contest gives you a break from your work! It also demonstrates a technique for using
authentic material. In the contest, you’ll see a new Mystery Object each week. These are
objects that are familiar to people in some contexts and unfamiliar to others. You could adapt
this activity to your classes.
a. Be as creative as possible in describing what it is in this week's Let Me Be Creative! forum
(correctness doesn't count in this forum). Post the most creative description of what the object is
and how it might be used. The correct answer will probably not be very creative, so save that for
the I Know It! forum.
OR
b. If you know what the object is, name it and explain it in as interesting and personal a way
as possible in the I Know It! forum.

Read more about the contest, including how to submit your own photos for a future contest,
at the >Contest Information link, found in the left sidebar.
To participate in this week’s contest please go to Week 1 Contest found in the >Contest
Forum list in >All Discussion Forums on the left menubar.

and also in the list >All Discussion Forums in the sidebar). This forum is visible only to members
of our course. Your introduction will help others in our course connect with you:
