Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport
Terminal 3
Location: Shenzhen, China
Client: Shenzhen Airport (Group) Co.
Completion: 2013
Gross Floor; Area: 500.000 m2
Passengers: 45 million passenger/year
Cost of Construction: 734.000.000 Euros

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport Terminal 3

• The concept of the plan for Terminal 3 of

Shenzen Bao’an international airport evokes the
image of a manta ray, a fish that breathes and
changes its own shape, undergoes variations,
turns into a bird to celebrate the emotion and
fantasy of a flightnatural light to filter through.

• The sculptural 500.000 sq m terminal evokes the image of a manta ray

• features a striking internal and external double skin honeycomb motif that wraps the
structure.
• At 1.5 km long, with roof spans of up to 80 m, honeycomb shaped metal and glass
panels punctuate the façade of the terminal allowing natural light to filter through.

• The symbolic element of the plan is the internal and external double “skin”
honeycomb motif that wraps up the structure.
• a double-layered steel structure with enough space in between for access by
maintenance workers. While the outer layer is made of flat panels of metal and glass,
the inside layer is a three-dimensional lattice of folded metal pieces forming
hexagonal openings. natural light to filter through.

• The terminal was built as a

steel structure tube on a
concrete substructure to
help speed construction ,
so the project could be
completed in three years

• On the interior, the terminal is characterized by distinctive white conical supporting

columns that rise to touch the roof at a cathedral-like scale.
• Stand-out features of the interior design include stylized white “trees” that serve as
air conditioning vents, and check-in “islands”, gates and passport-check areas with a
stainless steel finish that beautifully reflect the honeycomb patterns from above.

Queen Alia International Airport

Location: Amman, Jordan

Client: The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Ministry of Trans
Completion: 2013
Passengers: 3.5 million passenger/year to 12 million passenger/year
Queen Alia International Airport

• The architects of Foster + Partners were inspired by the Bedouin tents to create a canopy
of domes on the new airport terminal.
• Designed to serve as the main gateway to Amman, one of the oldest cities in the world,
its design resonates with a sense of place and local culture.
• Strategically the building ensures Amman position as the main center of the region of
Levante. From a logistical point of view, it allows the airport to grow by 6% annually over
the next twenty-five years thereafter increasing the capacity of 3,000,000 to 12,800,000
passengers per year by 2030.

• The terminal building is glass on

all sides allowing to observe the
takeoff and landing of aircraft.
• On each side of the central
building where the main
processing areas, shops, lounges
and restaurants are located two
springs with departure and
arrival gates.
• These volumes are outdoor
patios that following the Arabic
vernacular architecture
contribute to the environmental
strategy of the terminal with
plants and trees that help
eliminate air pollution as prior
to its introduction into the
treatment system step.

• In response to experience local

building and climate of Amman,
where summer temperatures
vary greatly between day and
night the building is constructed
entirely of concrete, the high
thermal mass of the material
provides a passive environmental
control.

• To allow for future expansion

seamless, each dome is a
modular unit. The domes branch
off from the support columns like
the leaves of a palm tree desert
and daylight flooded the
esplanade through holes forming
teardrop-shaped skylights joints
between the columns.
