GENERAL DESCRIPTION
MCM are metalclad switchgears with draw-out type circuit breakers.
Every function has been designed and manufactured following the
most advanced Quality Systems in order to get a high safety level
both in installation and operation.
One of the MCM most important performances is flexibility. It is
possible to incorporate all kind of devices: circuit breakers in SF6 or
vacuum technology, switch-disconnectors (with or without fuses),
isolating switches, current and voltage transformers of most
manufacturers and every type of protection relays. Also the use of
standard components such as isolators, voltage indicators, busbars,
fuses, etc. Allows to fulfil most of customer’s requirements.
On the other hand, the careful design and amplitude of every
compartment allow the access to all components, even when
mounted against a wall, a minimizes maintenance.
FIELD OF APPLICATION
MCM switchgears are used in Medium Voltage networks for the
24 maximum characteristics indicated in the table.

supplies, cogeneration, etc.

Functions

PRODUCT RANGE AND DESIGNATION

To construct a MCM switchboard, factory-built functional units are

installed side by side and bolted together.
The basic functions and main options are shown below (1).

Detailed description

FRAME

MCM switchgear frame is designed for self-supporting. The metallic

structure is made of cold rolled steel sheets of different thickness,
protected against corrosion.

This frame supports the different switching and the rest of the
components. It is designed to withstand the mechanical efforts due to
normal and extraordinary operating conditions such as short circuit
currents. The cover of the cubicle prevents from contacts with
energized or moving parts. The protection degree both in the service
and test position is IP3X, being the font door open or closed.

EARTHING SYSTEM

Each MCM cubicle includes as a protection an earthing system

consisting in a general earthing busbar situated at the bottom of the
cable compartment and running all through the cubicle.

The whole cover, including the door and the withdrawable truck as
well as the voltage and current transformers are mechanically
connected to this bar by means of copper braids or slipping contacts.
At the two ends of the earthing busbar a connection to the general
earthing system of the installation is available.

COMPARTMENTS

MCM cubicles are metal-clad, therefore they are divided into

compartments, segregated from the others by means of steel sheets.
Any fault in one of the compartments cannot propagate to the
adjacent ones.

Access to all compartments is possible from the front side, this allows
to install the cubicles against a wall.

The compartments are fitted with separate pressure relief facilities

discharging in an upward direction, avoiding damages to the
personnel and the rest of the installation.

The four compartments are described as follows.

COMPARTMENTS

Circuit breaker compartment

It is located in this compartment the circuitbreaker which is mounted

on a withdrawable truck. The design of this truck allows to
incorporate either SF6 or vacuum circuit breakers from different
manufactures. In some cases it is also possible to place voltage
transformers on the truck.

Depending on the position of the circuitbreaker there are three

possible situations:
- Service: in this position both, the main circuit and the auxiliary
circuits are connected.
- Isolated or test: the main circuit is isolated while the auxiliary
circuits are connected.
- Withdrawn: both circuits are disconnected (in this case, the doors
can be opened or closed).

Busbar compartment

The main busbar of the cubicle, including its connections and

supports, is located in this compartment,. These compartments have
been designed to withstand the thermal and mechanical efforts due
to rated and short time currents. It is also possible to provide
partitions with bushings between adjacent cubicles.

Cables compartment

In this compartment are located the medium voltage cable

terminations, the voltage and current transformers, the earthing
switch and the voltage indicators. It is possible the connection of 4
parallel cables per phase.

Low voltage compartment

This compartment is used for accommodating the devices for

protection, control, metering and all auxiliary components needed for
the right running of the installation.

Installation
and operation
INSTALLATION
Each MCM cubicle has at the top 4 hang points for its handling and
setting in the installation.

The floor where the cubicles will lay over should have a suitable
leveling. In the site and fixing points a tolerance of 2 per 1000 is
needed.

For fixing, one of the indicated ways may be followed:

- Using bolts to joint them to the site profiles.
- By means of spill bolts directly in the floor.
- Welding the frame to the site profiles.

OPERATION
The operation of MCM switchgear units is very simple, following the
operating handbook and the operating instructions of every device on
the cubicle.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

MC are metal enclosed switchgears, air insulated type, for

installations in Medium Voltage, which main characteristics agree
with the ones of MCM switchgears.

These switchgears have been designed to allow the incorporation of

different types of circuit breakers, current and voltage transformers,
to simplify operations as well as maintenance and to present great
protection and safety.

FIELD OF APPLICATION

MC switchgears are used in Medium Voltage networks for the

maximum characteristics indicated in the table.

STANDARDS

These switchgears have been designed, manufactured and tested

according to the requirements of international standards.
