applications.

Energylossesoccurfrequentlyinboththreephaseandsinglephasemotors.Thisisduetoafewfactors;
thefirstisasaresultofaninherentdesignflawintheinductionmotorreferredtoasthe“slip”ofthe
motor.Theslipofthemotorcanbeexplainedasthefollowing.Themotorstorqueisdevelopedfromthe
interactionofcurrentsflowinginthealuminumrotorbarsandthecopperstators’rotatingmagnetic
field.Therotorfollowsbehindthestatorsrotatingmagneticfield.

Inactualoperation,therotor’sspeedalwayslagstherotatingmagneticfield’sspeed,allowingtherotor

resultsinheatandelectricallosses.Thereisnodoubtthatthebasicconceptofreducingthevoltageon
amotorwhichisoperatingatlessthanmaximumefficiencycanresultinareductionoftheironlossof
themotor.Withapartiallyloadedmotor,areductioninthevoltageappliedtothemotorwillreduce
theironloss.Butwhatifwecoulddomore?Wecan,andthisiswhereRVmodecomesintoplay.

Reducingthevoltageoninductionmotorsoperatingatlessthanfullloadreducesthewastedenergy
that’sconsumed.Alsobyaddinginpowerfactorcorrectionwithcapacitors(tuningtheRUNcapvalues
toeachindividualloadrequirement)allowsthemotorto“synchronize”withtheneedsoftheload.Then
byaddinginafrequencydriveorpulsewidthmodulationintothemixanadvancedpowermanagement
(RV)configurationisattained.Typicallyinengineeringpracticeasimilarprocessisused.Thisprocess
runsthreephasemotorsfromsinglephasepowerandusescapacitorsonthemotorsasan“addͲaͲ
phase”setup.

Running3PHmotorsfrom1PHpowerviastartandruncapacitorsisnothingnew,howeverRVͲmodeis
notlikethecommon“addͲaͲphase”setup,butmorerelatedtoimpedancematchingbytuningthe
capacitorvalues,voltage,frequencyandpulseͲwidthinadvancedconfigurations.TheRVprincipleis
basedon“matchingthesourcetotheneedsoftheload”[asfirstreferencedbyNikolaTesla].

InathreephaseRVmotorexample,themotorisrunfromasinglephasepowersupplybyusing
capacitorstogeneratethethirdphase.Inatypical60hertzconfiguration,themotorswindingsare
connectedinseries(to480Vhighvoltagemode),butthemotorisdrivenfroman110Vgrid(operatingat
¼ofthevoltage).ThemotorwillthenrunatareducedHPcapacitybutthiswillbethemostefficient
andtheHPcanberaisedusingafrequencydrive.

TheHIimpedanceand3rdphasegenerationcreatesatransformeralikeoperationwherepoweris
managedmoreeffectively.BothsinglephaseandthreephasemotorscanberuninRVmode.However
asinglephasedemandsmorecapacitancetoruninRVmodeasitisalowerimpedancethananormal

principleforthesinglephaseisthesameasthethreephaseconversion.Onewindingisconnected
directlytomainsandthesecondthroughthecaps.Thecapsmakesurethattherewillbeca90Ͳdegree
phaseshiftbetweentheoriginalinputvoltageandsecondwindingvoltage.The90Ͳdegreewindingswill
createarevolvingmagneticfield,whichwillstartto“drag”thesquirrelͲcagerotoralong.
Fora60/50hertzsinglephaseRV.Youhavetwooptions;for60hertz,thefirstistouseastepdown
transformerfrom120VACto28VAC.ItwillworkwithadeͲratedHPinitially.With230VACmotorsuse

Theabove¾Hpdrillwasoperatedwithavariacfromthe50hertz240mainspower.175voltswas
dialedinfromthevariac.Thisdrillfreewheeledon1ACAcomparedtoitsnormaloperationof
2.52ACA!Thedrillhappilydidthesameloadasitwouldonitsfull240voltoperation.Dependingon
yourindividualloadrequirementsyoucandialinLESSorabiggervaluethroughthevariac.InRVmode
theRUNcapacitoristunedtotheindividualloadneeds,eitherbyraisingtheRUNcapvalueor
decreasingthevalue.

Alsosinglephasemotorswhichoperatewithabeltandpulleycanbeeffectivelytunedandoperatedin
RVmodetosaveenergyandmoney.Noteyouwillneedbiggerratedstartandcapacitorsforsingle
phaseRV”s.MakesureyouhaveabiggerthenormalstartcapacitorortheAmpdrawwilloverload

Wearedealingwithlargeinductanceandvoltage,soswitchingoftheCapsneedstobeveryrobust,and

smoothͲnogapbetween).Thistendstoruleoutusingabinarysequence,unlessyouusesomevery
fancyswitching.

Insteadlookatusingaheapofsmallvaluecapsthatarejustaddedinparallel.Sayuse20x0.5uFcapsto
makea0Ͳ10uFboxin0.5uFsteps.Toswitchthecapsin,usecheapandsimplerelays.Useacoupleof
cascadedbarͲgraphchipstodrivetherelays,andyouhaveaprettysimplevoltagecontrolledcapbox.
Reasonablycheapaswellsincethecapsandrelaysarecommoncomponents.Onecanbemadeand
designedtosensethevalueandautomaticallytunethevaluestotheneedsoftheload.

ConvertingthreephasemotorstorunRVmodegivesyouaVERYefficientelectricmotormodification
availablefromofftheshelfcomponents.Notonlycanthemotoridlewithefficiencynotseentoday
fromanyothermethod,butalsoinRVmodethemotorwillhavemoreefficientpowerondemandby
thecapacitortuning.AddtheFrequencydriveandyouhavetheuniqueRV.

ThefollowingisapictureofPhil’s3phaseRVwitha12voltDCmotorcoupledontop.Thiscircuitneeds
nostartcapandgivesanimmediatestartup.Whenthe3phaseisheavilyloadedtheslipcausestheDC
motortooworkharderwhichthenpullsthe3phasebackuptospeed.Afterrunningmanytestswith
this,theresultsshowitishighlyefficientwithbetter"powerondemand”characteristics.Alsothe
permanentmagnetDCmotor/generatorcanbeloadedwithanadditionalload.



AboveisPhil’sRVwithaDcmotorcoupledontop.Picturedrightisafrequencydriveninverter.

Bothmotorsoperatecoldwhenrunning,noteachaindriveistoonoisy,theadviceistogobeltdriven.If
youruna3phasemotorinRVmodewiththeBCSRCcircuitaboveyouwon’tbedisappointed.

Note,theDCmotordoesnotsee120voltsbutonlythevoltageitisratedfor.Withoutgetting
complicateditisalljustaresistancethingwiththedifferentialbetweentheDCandACmotor.Youwill
alsonoticethatthecurrentdrawismuchlessthannormalRVmodeandthereismuchmoretorque.

IfyouwanttooalsousethePM(permanentmagnet)Dcmotorasagenerator,itcanbedoneseebelow
forschematic.Allyoudoisconnectyournextload,andlet’ssayitislightbulbsacrosstheDCmotor.
YouwillseehowatinyinverterwillnowstartthePMandthecurrentwillfallwaylowerthanbefore,
andyoucangenerateexcesspowerfromtheDCmotorwithoutanycomplications.

PhilstatesͲI[Phil]haverun2X3phasemotorsmyselfusingtheDCmotorcircuitandtheyoperate
perfectly.Ihaveuseda12voltgolfbuggycartmotorandalsoa36voltDCmotorthatIbelievecould
havebeenoffanelectricscooter.


Togiveyouanideaofthetypesofresistance'sofaDCmotorthatcanbeusedwiththeRV,the12volt
motoris0.9ohms.The36voltmotoris2.8ohms.BecauseIhavespentmanyyearsinventingcircuitryfor
DCmotorsimprovingthereefficiencyIhavealsolearntwaystoochangetheirtorqueandtemperature
operation.VirtuallyallDCmotorscanbeadjustedsotheyruncooler,andthiswedobylooseningthe
boltsthatrunthroughthemotorandretardthecasethatsupportsthepermanentmagnets.

Theshaftistooruninaclockwisedirection,weslackenthethroughboltsandturnthemagnetcasing
antiͲclockwiseacoupledegreesoratleastuntilitcan’tturnanyfurther.Normallythisiswherethelong
throughboltsthatareintheelongatedslotbetweenthemagnetspullupagainstonesideofthe
magnets.Oncethisisdone,theDCmotorhasnowgotmuchmoretorqueandwilloperatefarcooler
thaneverbefore.

ItdoesslowtheRPMdownsomewhatrunningonitsown,buthasnoeffectwiththeoperationofthe
RV,asanaturalbalancetakesplacewithRPMandvoltagewhereboththeRVandDCmotor
automaticallystayintune.Itmaybewisetooputaconventionalscientificexplanationwhythe2
motorsruntogetherinharmony,andwhythecurrentusagenowdropsdownfurtherinthisoperation,
asIhaveacompletedifferentunderstandingofenergythatseemstooconfusepeoplefurther.LOL.

NowcloseloopingwiththeDCoutputtooaninverterisabigNO.ButthereisaYES.FirstofallIwill
explainasbestasIcanwhy.Electronshaveaformofmemorywheretheydonotliketobesentbackto
theoriginalsource.TocloseloopwiththeDCmotorinthisinstancebackintotheinverterwillblowthe
inverteroutimmediately.Thereareanumberofwaystoogetaroundthis,wherewecaneitherusean
isolationtransformerontheRV,orsendtheenergybackintoadifferentsource,sothereisno
reference.

AnotherthingIcanassureyouoffrommyexperienceisthatyoucanalsogetrunawayinthisclosed
loopsequence.Thisiswherethereturningenergyliftsthebatteryvoltageby2or3voltswhichinturn
liftstheoutputoftheinverterbymanymorevoltswhichinturnnowliftsthereturningenergybymany
morevoltsuntilwherethebatteryisunabletooholdasteadyvoltagebeingovercharged.Thisiswhere
somethingwillblow.

Thisiswhereweuse2batterieswheretheyalternate,sooneisrunningtheloadwhilethegenerated
outputischargingtheotherbattery.Afterashortperiodoftimewethenswitchinthechargedbattery
towork,andswitchintheotherbatterytoonowbecharged.Sowithasimplerelaycircuit,theDC
motorcanbechargingasecondbatteryforsometime,thenthisbatterycanlatterbeswitchedintoo
nowruntheinverter.

Sohowdoweregulatethechargingofabatterywherethevoltagecouldbeanythingfarhigherthan
14volts?Thisisasperthecircuitdescribedwhereinseriestoothechargingbatteryweconnectalight
bulbofwhateverwattagewewishtoouseforcharging.Astandardvoltageregulatorwastestheexcess
voltageasheat,sothenextbestthingistoodumptheexcessvoltageintheformofheatwhichalsois
producinglight.

Whenyouareswitchingbetweenbatteriesinthismanor,itisessentialtoohaveacapacitorofalarge
valueconnectedtootheinputpoweroftheinverter.Thisisbecausethereisamomentarydelayasthe
relaysswitch,andtheinverterrequiresasteadyvoltage.Ihopethisexplainsafewthingssopeoplecan
understandanysafetyissuesandpreventdamagingequipmentlikeaninverter.Ihavealsoaddedthe

Thesquirrelcagecanactuallybeconsideredasatransformersecondarywinding,whichisin"shorted"
statewhentherotorisjuststartingitsrotation.Andwhathappenswhenyoushortatransformer?Its
primaryvirtualinductance(andthusthetotalimpedance)decreasesverymuchandlotofcurrentwillbe
neededfromthepowersource.Pointisthattomaintainthisrotatingmagneticfieldinthestatorwhen
therotorisjustaccelerating,wehavetosupplyalotofcurrenttoALLofthestatorwindings.

That'swhyweneedmuchbiggercapacityforthestartcapͲXc=1/(2*PI*f*C)Ͳwearehavingconstant
frequencyandinordertopassmorecurrenttothethirdcoilalsoweneedtodecreasethereactive
resistanceofthecapacitor,thusweneedtoincreasethecapacitor'svalue.Sowewillusethestartcap
thatisabletopassalmostsimilaramountofcurrenttothethirdstatorcoilalso.

Whentherotorcomesuptospeed,therotatingmagneticfieldofthestatorwillcutlessandless.The
squirrelͲcagewindingsandthevirtualtransformershortingeffectdecreasesandthustheneeded
currentfromthepowersourcealsodecreases.Nowwhenwestillhavethebigstartcapinplace,then
it'sXc(reactivecapacitance)willbesosmallwhencomparedwiththethirdstatorwinding'sXL(reactive

Nowwhentherotorcomesuptospeed,therotatingmagneticfieldofthestatorwillcutlessandless.
ThesquirrelͲcagewindingsandthevirtualtransformershortingeffectdecreasesandthustheneeded
currentfromthepowersourcealsodecreases.Nowwhenwestillhavethebigstartcapinplace,then
it'sXc(reactivecapacitance)willbesosmallwhencomparedwiththethirdstatorwinding'sXL(reactive

resonantcircuitconfiguration.Inaseriesresonantcircuitthesourceseesminimumimpedanceat
resonance.

Thealternatorside

NowweareconnectingtheRVprimemoverwithanotheridenticalmotortobecomethealternator
side.Asweneedtoachieveaparallelresonancecondition.(ornearlysuchkindofresonancecondition)
intheprimemover(whentheRValternatorpartisloadedwithneededload),sothattheconsumed
powerfromthepowersupplywillbeminimal.
WhenweareloadingtheRVprimarywithsomemechanicalforce(likeloadedalternatorforexample),
wearereducingtherotorsspeed,therevolvingstatorfieldwillcutmoreofthesquirrelcagewindings,
thetransformerͲkindͲofloadingeffectincreasesandstatorwindingsvirtualresistancedecreases.Your
goalistofindaproperruncapforthisproperloadedstateofoperationtoachievesuchstate,thatthe
consumedcurrentfrompowersourcewouldbeminimal.

WhenloadingtheRVprimemover,wewillgetclosertoresonantstateandthecurrentthatisconsumed
fromthepowersupply,WILLNOTincreaselinearlywithloading,butmayevenDECREASEduetothe
fact,thattheoverallsystemresistancemightbeseveraltimesbiggerduetohighQnonͲlineareffect.

TheoppositeistruetoalternatorpartͲthereyouwillwanttocreatemaximumcurrentinstator
windingsandalsomaximumvoltageinstatorwindingsandallthiswithoutcausingTOOmuchdragto
theprimemover.SobasicallywithRVyouneedtotune2caps,thealternatorcapandalsotheruncap.
Firstuseabitbiggerruncap,getthealternatortoproperlygenerate(byselecting/changingthevalueof
alternator'svectoringcap)withoutboggingdowntheprimemover.

AlsoyouneedtodothetuningintheLOADEDstate,wheresomeusefulloadisalsoconnectedtothe
alternator.So,whenthealternatorworksandloadispowered,thentunealsotheprimemover'srun
captotheminimalvalueofconsumedcurrentfromthepowersupply(ofcourseyouneedtokeepthe
alternatorrunningtoo,soreducingtheruncaptooabruptlycancausetheprimemovertolosetoo
muchofit'sdrivingpowerandalternatormightstop).

TheessenceofRVisnotrunningonminimalcurrentifidle.Theessenceistohave2motorsconnected,
oneasmotorandtheotherasgenerator.Aloadwillbeconnectedtogenerator(havingit'sdual
windingsinparallel,thuslowQ,motorparthasit'sdualwindingsinseries=>highQ,biginductivity)and
onlythenthemotorpart'sruncapisTUNEDtoMINIMALMOTORCURRENTWITHDESIREDLOAD.

NowwehaveaHighQnarrowbandmotorpartdrivinglowQwidebandalternatorpartwithdesired
load.Motorpartwillbetunedtoresonanceandthisresonancewillcontributealotofmechanical
powertothealternatorpartwhileconsumingminimalpowerfromthepowersupply.Themotorpart
shouldhaveUvoltagedriving4*Uratedwindings,thisgivessomeheadroomforresonantriseand
resonantamplificationeffectswithouttheironssaturating.

Ifrunwithoutloadwiththesameruncap,themotorpartwillnothaveminimumcurrentbecauseCrun
forloadedcaseisbiggerthanCrunforidlecase.SoinidlemodetheRVprimary'sinputcurrentwillbe
actuallycapacitiveinsteadofinductiveaswithnormalmotors.Butwhenloaded,thesweetpointis
