Eco-mobility = Active mobility = Walking and cycling (conventional bicycle).

No mechanical motor (human body is the motor) and we burn calories (health) to
overcome the distance. Electric bicycles and PMD are NOT eco- / active-mobility. 2
Síntesis
• Eco-mobility or active mobility = walking and
bicycle (conventional)
• Consider them as a transport MODE
• “Complete streets” (USA)

• They need infrastructure TOO

• “Effective sidewalk” (w/o urban furniture) D

• Bicycle lanes: wider to include PMD

• Continuous flow (traffic light phase for elderly
pedestrians) and minimum network (instead
of “isles”)
• Democratize the space in the street according
to flows of people 3
Síntesis (2)

• Safety issues: slow speed (50 vs 30 km/h),

physical protections, signals, traffic lights, etc.

• “Super-blocks” and pedestrian AREAS

City Planning
Multipolar and autocontent City Planning
• From zoning urbanism to flow
urbanism (network)
• Density, integration, agreement
• Quick access from/to neighborhood
and internal enjoyment: recovering
the human neighborhood and its
quality services
• Mobility plans, C/D and energy in
urban planning
• Cost of PT in urban costs
• “Impact fees” and ranking ∝ “smart
growth”
• Integrate added value in
investment
• Control any activity that creates
Mobility Law, 2003 (Catalonia
mobility (storages, logistic hubs, Government)
parking, etc.)
Decree of Generated Mobility, 2006
(GenCAT) 7
“Democratize” public streets

• 60-80’s: ensure traffic circulation and assign

the “extra” space for other purposes
• Several and richer uses: evolutive uses
– Segregation needs for safety (speed gradient)
– Physical minimum or due to cohesive network
• Recovering part of the public street
– Coexistence
– Public and scarce good
– Specialists in pedestrians (sidewalks), bicycles, L/U,
etc.

Right of private use of public space : ”This is NOT a graffiti”, Anna Pla
(2003), Terapias Urbanas, Architects Association, Barcelona
-Regulated public spaces: blue area (motorbike, tent)
-Public spaces not regulated: blue square in a road, pavement

Pedestrian scramble
A pedestrian scramble, also known as scramble intersection and scramble
corner (Canada), 'X' Crossing (UK), diagonal crossing (US), exclusive
pedestrian interval, or Barnes Dance, is a type of traffic signal movement that
temporarily stops all vehicular traffic, thereby allowing pedestrians to cross an
intersection in every direction, including diagonally, at the same time.

One of the world's

most heavily used
pedestrian
scrambles, at
Hachikō Square
in Shibuya, Tokyo
