Dept of EEE
Sub Name: GME Date:
Sub Code: EE-304 Faculty Name Time: 1hr
I. Answer all the following questions: 3 x 2 =6M
1. Select suitable diameter of a solid shaft to transmit 90 kW power at 300 rpm. The maximum torque is
30% greater than mean torque. The allowable shear stress should not exceed 65N/mm2.
2. The allowable stress for a hollow steel column which carries an axial load of 2000kN is
12N/mm2. If the external diameter of the column is 300 mm, determine the internal diameter.
3. A cylindrical bar is 20 mm in diamtere and 1 m long. During the tensile test it was found that the
longitudinal strain is times the lateral strain. Calculate: (a) Poisson’s ratio (b) Bulk modulus (c)
Rigidity modulus if its elastic modulus is 1 x105 N/mm2.

I. nswer any two of the following questions: 2 x 7 =14M

1. A mild steel rod has a diameter of 20 mm and is 4 m long is subjected to an axial load of 45 kN.
Find the changes in the dimensions of the rod. Take E= 2 x 105 N/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio as
0.25. Find also the values of shear modulus and bulk modulus of elasticity.
2. The following readings are obtained from a tensile test of a specimen: (i) Diameter of the
specimen = 20mm, (ii) Gauge length =100mm, (iii) Extension on at a load of 100 kN = 0.15mm;
(iv) Load at yield point = 120kN; (v) maximum load = 200kN, (vi) Final length = 170 mm, (vii)
Diameter of neck = 12.6 mm. Calculate the following (i) Young’s modulus, (ii) Stress at yield
point, (iii) % reduction in area, (iv) % elongation (v) Working stress if factor of safety is 3.
3. (a) State torsion equation and explain the terms involved with units
(b) Define the terms (i) Poisson’s ration (ii) Linear strain and Lateral strain.
