Installation Instructions for SLC 5/05 Processors

Firmware/Operating System Upgrade

Introduction
With the recent discontinuation of A-B part numbers 1747-M11 (Flash EEPROM w/ 32k
for 5/03, 5/04, and 5/05 processors, P&H part # 79U2704D60) and 1747-M12 (Flash
EEPROM w/ 64k for 5/03, 5/04, and 5/05 processors, P&H part # 79U2704D60), and the
fact both are being superseded by A-B part number 1747-M13 (Flash EEPROM w/ 64k
for 5/03, 5/04, and 5/05 processors, P&H part # 79U2704D95) which only works on
processors with Series C firmware, there is now a need to upgrade existing and future
SLC processors. This document explains how to upgrade the firmware to Series C on
5/05 processors.

To check what Firmware and Operating System is on the SLC processor, turn the
processor to the side and check the O.S. # and SER letter label.

Figure 1: OS and Firmware Label Placement

To check to see if a SLC 5/05 has the newest OS on it, under the OPERATING SYSTEM
INFORMATION, check the O.S. # and SER letter label. The O.S # should read 1747-
OS501 and the letter “C” should appear below the SER label. If the label has the wrong
information, the unit needs to be upgraded using this procedure.
See the table below for details on the Flash EPROM.

Table 1: A-B Memory Devices for SLC processor

If you upgrade an SLC 5/05 processor, you receive anomaly fixes as well as added
functionality. During the upgrade, the ladder logic program inside the processor is erased.
Therefore, the first step in upgrading the firmware/operating system is to save the
processor’s ladder logic program.

The Flash EPROMs are electrostatic sensitive devices. Do not handle without proper
grounding precautions. Do not install PROM with power applied to the processor.
System Requirements

· Personal computer with at least a 486 processor

· Windows NT 4.0, 95, 98, or 2000
· At least 16 MB memory
· Ethernet Connection Port

Installing ControlFLASH

1. Insert Disk 1 of the ControlFLASH Firmware Upgrade Kit into your floppy disk drive.

2. From the Windows 2000, NT 4.0, or 95/98 Start Menu, select Run.

3. When the dialog box appears, type a:\setup, where “a” is the drive designation that
contains disk 1.

4. Click Run (or OK). The Setup Wizard appears, which guides you through the
installation process.

5. Insert Disk 2 when prompted.

6. A ControlFLASH directory is created in your Program Files directory. The default

destination directory when installing all versions of ControlFLASH is a folder named
ControlFLASH in your Program Files directory. By installing this version of
ControlFLASH you overwrite files that currently exist in this folder if you have a
previous version of ControlFLASH installed on your computer. If you wish to retain the
capability to use the previous version of ControlFLASH you need to:

· Rename or move the current ControlFLASH folder found in your Program Files
directory to another directory (i.e. an archive type folder), or
· Change the installation folder name from ControlFLASH for the new version that you
are installing.
Prior to Running ControlFLASH

1. Save the current SLC 5/05 processor program to your hard drive using your
programming software if not a new processor out of the box.

2. Note the Hardware Address (located on the Ethernet Daughtercard) of the

5/05 processor (has format of 00:00:BC:XX:XX:XX). Also note the Catalog Number of
the SLC 5/05 processor being upgraded.

The user program is cleared as part of the operating system upgrade process. You must
restore your program after successfully loading the operating system upgrade. Also, all
communication ports are returned to default parameters.

3. Next, click on the Start button and then select Run.

4. In the Run window that appears, type in “command.”

5. If the operating system of your system is Windows 98/NT/2000/XP, type “ipconfig” at

the command prompt and press enter. If the operating system of your system is Windows
95, type “winipcfg” at the command prompt and press enter. Note the IP Address that is
displayed, such as in the example “139.69.19.199.” For the firmware update process, you
will be asked to use the IP address that is one above and one below that IP address that
was displayed. Such as with 139.69.18.199, the two IP addresses that could be used
would be 139.69.18.198 and 139.69.18.200. Record the two IP Addresses that are found
and record them for later use.
Returning SLC 5/05 Processors to Initial Factory Conditions

To do this:

1. Disconnect power from the SLC 500 power supply and remove the SLC 5/05 from the
chassis if the SLC processor is located in a chassis.

2. If the SLC processor was new and was pulled from stock, a chassis and power supply
must also be pulled from stock. The chassis has a P&H part # of 79U2704D31,
79U2704D32, 79U2704D33, or 79U2704D34. The SLC power supply has a P&H part #
of 79U2704D37, 79U2704D38, 79U2704D73 (D37, D38, D73 all require 120VAC
input), or 79U2704D76 (D76 requires 24 VDC input). The power supply snaps on to the
left side of the chassis.

3. Disconnect the battery by removing the battery connector from its socket.

4. Locate the VBB and GND connections on the right side of the motherboard.

5. Place a small bladed screwdriver across the VBB and GND connections and hold for
60 seconds. This returns the processor to the initial factory conditions.
Using ControlFLASH

When you return the processor to the initial factory conditions, the user program and
communication configurations are returned to their default settings.
ATTENTION
NOTE: Do not interrupt the flash procedure. Once you have begun to perform a
download of the firmware for either the daughtercard (step #16) or the motherboard (step
#19), the SLC 5/05 is put into an unrecoverable state if you lose power or
communications for any reason.

1. Launch the ControlFLASH application by double-clicking on the

ControlFLASH.exe file.

2. Verify that the J4 jumper of the SLC 5/05 processor being upgraded is set to Protect.
The daughtercard firmware can only be updated when the J4 jumper is set to Protect.

3. Insert the SLC 5/05 processor into an SLC chassis, attach a crossover Ethernet cable to
the processor from your computer and apply power to the chassis. Verify that the
Ethernet light comes on.

4. Verify that the SLC 5/05 processor’s key switch is in the PROG or REM PROG (RUN
led not illuminated) mode.

5. The Welcome to ControlFLASH window is displayed. Click Next.

6. The Catalog Number window is displayed. Select the appropriate catalog number and
click Next.

7. The AB_SNMP.DLL – Enter IP Address window is displayed. Type in the IP address

for the processor. Use one of the two IP Addresses that were found earlier.
8. Click the Get Info button.
