CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The Pedal Operated Washing is the project which is best option where there is a problem

of electric supply or there is shortage of electric supply. This project is how weight and portable

so that easily transported. We used the simple cycling mechanism to run the machine shaft.

Continuous Rotation of Bike Pedal transfer energy from a human source through the use of a foot

pedal. This technology is most commonly used for transportation and has been used to propel

bicycle. Less commonly pedal power is used to power agricultural and hand tools and even to

generate electricity. Pedal powered grinders and pedal power.

This project concentrates on pedal powered washing machine. Bike Washing Machine

combines a stationary bicycle and washing machine, you can exercise while at the same time

simultaneously washing your clothes. When you ride this bike, the pedaling motion causes the

drum of the washing machine to rotate, at the same time. Peddling washing machine is a

very great innovation in its own. Peddling washing machine is specially made for

the purpose of its utilization to wash the cloth by means of applying pedal. Today

due to nonrenewable energy cries is basic need to utilize the energy from other

way or to save the energy.

According to Jadoun (2009) cloth washing is one of the essential parts of

the life but is considered undesirable because of the involvement of efforts, time,

energy and cost. It Stateted that Jadoun the Pedal Powered Washing will also

involve physical fitness because it is needed to move your legs to make the Pedal

1
Powered Washing function. According to Amitav (2011) Pedal Powered Washing

Machine is a machine which is driven peddling. It is the best alternative of

electricity powered washing machine. It Stated that Amitav the Pedal Powered

Washing have an advantage because it does not need any electricity to function.

Theoretical Framework

Optimal Control Theory: Yan (2006) generalized the optimal shapes of flywheels under

different rotational speeds. For the fiber – reinforced composite flywheels, most studies are

focusing on the material distribution. To overcome the shortcoming that the calculation efficiency

of the ordinary method is low in the flywheel rotor shape optimization, adopting the optimal

control theory, brief analytic expressions of optimal rotor shapes are gained directly based on

analyzing the effects of rotating speed on the rotor shapes and dividing it into low, medium and

high intervals. This shape optimization of energy storage flywheel rotor optimal control theory

helps to manipulate the flow of electricity by its speed different shapes. The stored energy depends

on the rotational speed of the flywheel.

RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

This section presents the literatures and or energy source using bike pedal, the researchers

reviewed before conducted the study. Furthermore, it presents issues and concepts in alternative

source of energy using bike pedal.

Related Literature

According to Saha, Bose and Srikanth (2009) the importance of the flywheel design

specification selection and its contribution in the energy storage performance. This contribution

is demonstrated on the example cross-sections using computer aided analysis and optimization

procedure.

According to EL-Naggar and Kholeif (2009) said that it had suggested that the disk-rim

type flywheel for light weight. The mass of the flywheel is minimized subject to constraints

sufficient moment of inertia and admissible stresses. The rotating disk of uniform thickness and

density is applied to each disk and the rim is not dependent on suitable condition at the junction.

Suitable boundary conditions of centrifugal stresses are applied. The dimensional ratios and

design specification are obtained for minimum weight.

According to Patterson (2007) claimed that the broad goal of this project was the

development and demonstration of a complete prototype Flywheel Power System (FPS) and

successful proof of the feasibility of this energy storage technology.

According to Hsu (2009) stated that flywheel-based regenerative energy recovery system,

storage & release system developed at laboratory. It can be recover and store regenerative energy

9
produced by braking motion of generator with alternating rotary velocity such as the rotor of a

wind turbo generator subject to not continuously intake of wind and the axels of electric

automobiles during the frequent braking and coasting.

Relevant Theories

Two theories provide a comprehensive theoretical framework that may explain the rotation

of flywheel provides electricity.

According to Takahashi (2008) he claims that “Fiber reinforced composites are particular

attractive use as flywheel materials due to their high strength and low density”. The use of

composite materials in flywheel designs offer numerous advantages over metallic alloys, including

weight and increased strength. This is due to the high tensile strength of the fiber reinforcement

phase.

Another researcher supports this theory, Wayden (2008) stated that “A flywheel plays an

important role in storing energy in modern machine systems”. Flywheels can store rotational

energy at high rotating speed and have the ability to deliver a high output power if the system

needs a stored energy to overcome a sudden loading or keep rotating for an expecting long time.

Having enough speed or high rotating speed stores more electricity which can be used longer by

using other materials to store more energy. Moreover, another researchers supports the theory of

(Yan, 2006).

10
Related Studies

This section, however, presents the studies made by researchers and inventors from

international.

Peddling Washing Machine:

According to Naresh (2016). Peddling washing machine is a very great innovation in its

own. Peddling washing machine is specially made for its purpose of its utilization to wash the

clothes by means of applying pedal. Today due to non-renewable energy cries its basic needs to

utilize the energy from other way or save the energy. This project includes the instruction and

utilization of the peddling washing machine, it is raw material, its working, benefit of the

peddling washing machine with respect to actual electronics washing machine save and not very

expensive. Its main except is exercises with applying the pedal to wash the cloth.

Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS):

According to Aitchison and Leijens (2016). Many Pacific Island Countries (PICs) lack the

benefit of electrification in their outer lying regions, particularly on remote islands. Consequently,

alternative power sources have been investigated for such situations and are widely reported; for

example: wind, wave, tidal and solar generation. In isolation these technologies provide heavily

disrupted electrical power, unless backed by a substantial and thereby expense power storage

system. More recently, the emergent micro grid concept has facilitated the integration of these

discrete power sources and has therefore extended their temporal utility, making them more useful

to their host communities. However, with the addition of an energy storage device within the micro

grid architecture (typically a battery bank) further enhancements to the around-the-clock

accessibility of electrical power can be readily achieved for such system users. This paper explores

the feasibility of developing a new, low speed Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) for use in
11
the pacific region by small and isolated communities. Also, the specific electrical power needs, of

the outlying communities, are presented prior to technical solutions being sought. Optimized

flywheel performance, electro-mechanical coupling, safety and environmental impact are all

addressed in the development, alongside other crucial technical consideration and state-of-the-art

technological developments. The reported work is leading to the practical implementation of a

FESS bound micro grid in remote Oceania.

METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter present on how the researcher will conduct a study. Methods and techniques

of the study, Research Design, respondents of the study, instrument of the study, Data gathering

Procedure, Data processing and Statistical Treatment.

Methods and Techniques used

According to Mahmoods (2012) “Mixed methods research involves collecting and

analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data includes closed-end

information that undergoes statistical analysis and results a numerical representation. Qualitative

data, on other hand, is more subjective and open-ended. It allows for the “voice” of the participants

to be heard and interpretation of observations. A researcher may collect data using a quantitative

data instruments.” The researcher may then follow up by interviewing a subset of the participants

to learn more detailed information about some of the survey responses, providing a more thorough

understanding of the result. Researcher are able to use all the tools available to them and collect

more comprehensive data. This provides result that have a broader perspective of the overall issue

or research problem.

13
Research Design

According to Calmorin (2010) descriptive research primarily focuses on describing the

nature of demographic segments, without focusing on “why” a certain phenomenon occurs. In

other words, it “describes” the subject of the research, without covering “why” it happens.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary

 Throughout history, human has applied energy through the use of arms, hands and back.

With the invention of bicycle and pedaling, legs then began to be considered as a means to

transfer power from human muscles. A person can generate four times more power by

pedaling than by hand cranking. The same rate of power achieved by hand cranking can be

achieved by pedal power but with far less effort and fatigue. Pedal power allows one to

drive devices at faster rates or to operate devices that require too much power and hand

cranking cannot provide the power. Over the centuries, the treadle has been one of the

most popular method of using legs to produce power. Treadles are still found in low-

power range machines such as sewing machines. Power levels that can be produced by a

human through pedaling are dependent on how strong the person is and also on how long

the person needs to pedal.

Conclusions

 The machine must be inexpensive and easy to build if it will be adopted into the

community. We recognized this need and designed the machine from the start with low

cost in mind. The machine will only contain parts that are readily available anywhere. This

eliminates the need to order or import components just for the washing machine. The

machine also uses bicycle parts for all the precision parts.

 The washing machine can be used by the urban people also while workout and exercises.

It can serve dual purposes. While cycling, the clothes can be washed utilizing the pedaling

24
of the human being and the human will get exercise because of the movement that they are

doing.

Recommendations

The following recommendations are offered based on the finding and conclusion of the

study:

 When any detailed design has been done, it is easily understood that no product/design get

at its best or 100% efficient in its operation. There should always be opportunities for

continual development and improvement. As shown, despite the fact that the selected

concept proved to obtain satisfactory results, it could be still being improved to obtain a

higher effectiveness of efficiency in the discharge of the intended duty.

 Although the working model of the pedal powered washing machine was fabricated and

implemented, there is a scope of further work in the project which has not been undertaken.

There are a number of ideas where the loss of power can be reutilized and the design can

be modified for better performance.

 The energy wasted during washing can be utilized in most fruitful way by using it in

another household machine which would work simultaneously as the washing goes on. The

capacity of washing can be increased so that more clothes can be washed, thus utilizing the

wasted energy. It would be more efficient to store energy using a flywheel and use the

energy when needed. Future pedal powered washing machine should have a flywheel.

 Then the future researchers need to prepare a budget to make this study.
