Civil 3D to Revit workflows

 The more complex part of collaboration between Civil 3D and Revit

use to be how to establish a good shared coordinates process.
 With Revit 2018 all this process is simplified, as Revit can recognize
GIS coordinates in a linked DWG.
 We will create a simple placeholder file to bring the GIS coordinates
and positioning to our Revit base project.

 The placeholder based in a DWG that contain the GIS coordinates of

our project will be placed manually and align to our survey base point.
 Then we will proceed to acquire coordinates from the linked
placeholder.

 Second phase of our project setup will be to link the Civil 3D master
plan.
 This time as the files are using the same coordinates, a link using
shared coordinates will work perfectly here.

 Once our project as is Coordinate System established we can use

different methods to work with new or existing project files that compose
our federated model.
 First method will be to extract a placeholder correctly positioned that will
be the starting point for a new project.
 Draw an alignment grid, create a group and apply project coordinates to
it.
 This linked file, will be used to develop project components and is
correctly linked to our Base project.

 A second process will be to insert in our project an existing project.

 Link the project manually, position it on our project position, and apply
project coordinates to it.

 Models linked on our project could and should be aligned to meet project
definitions.
 When changes are made, Revit will propose to save new position to the
link file.

 Another method is to apply project conditions to an existing project.

 In this situation the same existing placeholder will be used to define the
project origin, and is rotation in the true north angle.
 Later this project can be linked by shared coordinates on the right spot,
with no need of adjustment.
 At same time for project development needs, a topo-surface will be
created in Revit using a file from Civil 3D with contours of the working
area.

 In Revit we will start a new family in the site category

 Insert the Dwg manually and use the insertion point to align with the
family origin.
 When inserting the family we will use the survey point as the family point
of insertion, this way in Revit we are following the same origin used in
Civil 3D.

 As we are developing our project in Revit a new project condition was

created, a ramp to have access to a building garage.
 We will request to the Civil engineers to define the model and obtain the
new surface, so a document is generated with plain 2D information that
will be used in Civil 3D to redefine the surface.

 Once the new
surface is
received, an
update of the
family will be
done and our
model will
immediately
reflect the
changes.

 As our models have a shared coordinate system with project original

coordinates, our models will land in the right spot.
 Different inserting point could need to be used depending how the Revit
file was created.
 Usually we need to insert the Survey point coordinates and the project
base point offset to get a perfect landing.

 If a model have more then 1 site definitions, be sure to place the one for
our project as default, as that one will be the used when the Revit file is
loaded in Infraworks.
